April - 2000 WEB-SITE RELEASE from

MAYBOLE BAPTIST CHURCH

Rev Richard MARTIN - Minister

SMILE, SMILE, SMILE

As an internet user, you have probably received an e-mail rhyme which starts:

Smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu . . . .

It arrived on my screen again this morning - and faithfully I passed it on. After all, Christians do have something worth smiling about.

I’m not talking about the fatuous expression you may sometimes get which says I’m thinking of other things but feel I should be nice to people I pass in the street.

Rather, I mean a look which tries to convey

- Have I got something to be happy about!!

No season in the year expresses it better than this one. Not Spring (great as it is), but Easter - which I prefer to call Resurrectiontide.

(. . . my computer had to learn that word!).

So many people think of Lent as a morose period, and of Good Friday as a sad and silent day, and they miss the great joy, the buzz, the kick, the thrill of what it all means.

Yes, the Lord Jesus Christ did suffer badly.

He was arrested, tortured, given a mockery of a show trial

found not guilty by Pilate,

and illegally condemned to death by crucifixion.

Yes He was hung out to die.

(a normal death for non-Roman criminals).

But then came THE DAY OF RESURRECTION.

(Easter Sunday, if you must).

Jesus who suffered so that my sin, and yours, might be forgiven, ROSE FROM THE DEAD.

The Apostle Peter was able to say this about Jesus, and these events. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. (1 Peter 2:24)

Just in case you don’t already know it, please let me tell you - to know that your sins are forgiven and that the LIVING Lord Jesus is in your life every day is something to be happy about - something worth smiling about!
