Marathons Are
The In Thing
My son-in-law
ran his first marathon this year - the London. I'm not sure if he
knows the origin of the marathon, but, like so many, he's been 'bitten'
by it. He's already training for the next.
In 490 BC the
Greeks won a tremendous victory over the Persians at the Battle of
Marathon. A particularly strong warrior was chosen to carry news of
the victory to the capital. He ran, non-stop, the full 42 kilometres
Arriving in
Athens, he had only the strength to cry out Victory! Victory!
Then he slumped to the ground and died
- thus
paying with his life, the proclamation of victory.
This story
reminds me of a yet more glorious event - the coming of the Lord Jesus
Christ into this world. He came to announce the great news of GOD'S SAVING
GRACE. Paul put it like this: He
came & preached peace to you who were far away & peace to those
who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one
Spirit. (Ephesians chap. 2 vs. 17-18).
The Greek
runner expired, crying out Victory! And a famous race was instituted in
his honour. Jesus Christ died on a cross at Calvary, crying out: It
is finished! And thus He purchased our
salvation from sin.
You may share
in a dead Greek's glory
by running the
London Marathon - or some other.
But i f
you would know salvation & the peace Christ offers,
You must recognise
that He died for your sins.
