The
testimonial letter below, dated 1863, is note-worthy for the fact that the
letter head is a drawing of the proposed West Church and Manse buildings to
built by Sir James Fergusson. The
Manse was in fact, later built on the other side of the church. Following the
letter is a transcript of it. The letter and transcript are both the generous
contribution of Murray Reid, descendant of the subject of the letter, Mr.
James Reid.

WEST CHURCH MAYBOLE.
WITH PROPOSED MANSE
To be built by Sir James
Fergusson Bart. MP.
West
Parish Maybole, Ayrshire 1863.
I
have great pleasure in bearing testimony to the character and abilities of Mr.
James Reid. He is the son of our late respected Elder of the Church of Scotland,
and who for 30 years enjoyed the good opinion of everyone in that sacred
capacity. I have known Mr. James Reid for more than six years. He is a most
industrious young farmer, has received a most liberal education , was a regular
attender a divine ordinancy, and being of a quiet and amiable nature, an
honest sober and steady in his engagements. I have every reason to
recommend him, feeling in my own mind that from personal acquaintance with him I
have confidence in his trustworthiness.

Thomson
