"Can you
believe I did it? After dating for more than 8 years I got married on May
9th to Oscar Benavides. The wedding was wonderful. He is from Ecuador, but
we both have lived in Stamford for years. My family came over and all the
men wore kilts in the Pride of Scotland tartan, the men on my husbands
side wore tails. Having my family here for the occasion was something
else. I had my sister Alexa, cousin Emma Docherty and two other friends as
bridesmaids. Emma's brother Jamie and her fiancée Andy Conkie served as
ushers.
We were
married in the First congregational church in Stamford, CT, we chose this
church because the Pastors family are from MAYBOLE! We were married by
Pastor Gary Brown. I think it was his grand father that was born in
Maybole. In January we started looking at different churches. We met the
pastor after the service and he was asking where we were from and when he
told us about the Maybole connection my mind was made up there and then.
Not many people over here know of our little town. If that wasn't a sign
then what was. It was very traditional, we had the piper pipe in the
guests and then pipe us out of the church to Scotland the Brave. We even
served Haggis as the starter. We had Scottish flags in the reception hall
and 2 D'JS to pay music from both cultures. My family felt like Carmen
Maranda, swinging the kilts to the Spanish music. Everyone had a fabulous
time and many were in awe at the way we combined our two cultures. I was
walked down the aisle by me stepfather and my uncle Alex was waiting at
the alter, I was then given away by both men. It was a very emotional
moment."
