When the last major tannery closed in 1969, it seemed that the shoe trade in Maybole had ceased. But one small factory survived the march of time. The company of Harrison & Goudie continued to make boots of the finest quality, hand made the way they were decades ago. Pictured above is Dick Goudie with a pair of his boots. Dick Goudie died at the age of 90 in July of 2002 after spenting some of his retirement years in Lisbon, Portugal where his daughter Mary and son-in-law Rui reside. Plans are to turn Dick's factory into an organic food production unit. Mary and her husband Rui also give tours of Lisbon and have a web site with more information at: Anubi's Lisbon.
