Ayrshire Pilgrims’ Trail

Maybole Historical Society has commissioned a feasibility study into the establishment of a sign-posted Pilgrims’ Trail through Ayrshire from Largs and Kilbirnie in the north part of the county to the border of Galloway (heading for Whithorn) via communities such as West Kilbride, Kilwinning, Dundonald, Prestwick, Minishant, Maybole, Kirkoswald, Turnberry, Girvan, Pinmore, Pinwherry, Barhill, Colmonell and Ballantrae. The study will attempt to identify historic pilgrims’ trails through the county en route to Whithorn. Modern equivalent trails, visitor attractions, accommodation, shopping and possible markets (for example cyclists, walkers, motorists). It will also attempt to quantify the business, employment and tourists benefits which such a trail might bring to the area and the potential for expansion outside Ayrshire to Paisley and to Whithorn.

This project is being part-financed by the Scottish Government and the European Community, Ayrshire Leader 2007-2013 Programme and by South Ayrshire Council and North Ayrshire Council.
