Work Shadowing
The work shadowing is
an initiative which Carrick has participated in for many years and
this year is sure to be no different. It involves one of the S6
business management, administration or accounts pupils entering
there CV to a company, after this the applicants are interviewed and
one of them is chosen to represent the school. This year the judges
had an extremely hard job in choosing Carrick’s representative but
they eventually decided on Elizabeth McJannet. Elizabeth will be
placed into a business and follow the manager for a total of 1 week
to see what their job entails. After this she will submit a report
on her experience and also do a presentation, along with
participants from other schools, to a board of judges who will then
decide who the overall winner is. We wish her the best of luck and
will update you nearer the time on how she gets on.

P7 Peer Helpers
On Thursday 27th
a group of primary sevens from Maidens, Cairn, Crosshill, Straiton,
and Kirkmichael came up to Carrick for the afternoon to work with
the sixth years. They were trained on how to be buddies so they
could go back to their primary and carry on the skills they learnt
within their school. They were split into groups with a mixture of
schools in each group, after that they then spent the afternoon
being trained by the sixth years on various skills such as, how to
be a good listener, how to get people to communicate and also to
express yourself and deal with different emotions. The primary
sevens seemed to enjoy themselves and they had a lot of fun. The
next group of primary sevens will be coming on 4th
October and they will do similar activities so hopefully they will
have as much fun as the previous group.
Culzean Trip- Young Roots
On Friday 28th
September, Gemma Scobie, Hannah McCubbin, Claire McNeillie, Catlin
Grieg and Grant Kidd went to Culzean Castle as part of the Young
Roots Project to research the Kennedy family. They were given a
guided tour of the castle and access to the education suite. The
visit proved to be of great benefit to the research team.
S3 Substance Abuse Day
On Friday the 28th
September all pupils in S3 attended a Substance Abuse Day, the aim
of which was to show the pupils what negative effects drugs and
alcohol can have. Not only were the pupils shown the drugs for real
(though all safely packaged!), they were also permitted to try on
some beer goggles to allow them to experience being under the
influence of alcohol first hand. The pupils then returned to the
school to be given a fire safety demonstration, in which they were
shown how flammable and dangerous chip pans can be when left on. All
in all S3 enjoyed an educational and interesting day, and have both
an advice pack and a water bottle to take home with them.
S1/S2 Mentors
A number of S6 were
selected at random who have been trained as peer helpers to work as
mentors for S1/S2 classes. This commenced on Wednesday 3 October at
registration. The selected senior pupils went to their mentor class
and accomplished the areas they were to check up on i.e. No
trainers, No dangling earrings.
