This year's Straiton Fun Day
will be on 26 August 2006. As usual, the feature event will be the
Craigengower Hill Race which starts from outside the McCandlish Hall in
the village, goes to the Hunter-Blair Monument on top of Craigengower
and returns to finish in the park in the village. The race is open to
everyone (£5/£3 entry) and there are cash prizes for the overall winner,
the ladies champion, the junior champion and the village champion. All
finishers receive a commemorative medal. More details are available
from
eoghan.baird1@btopenworld.com.
Of course, the Fun Day
involves more than the Hill Race. There are children's races in the
park, five-a-side football (you don't need a team - teams are organised
on the day), mini quad bikes, target golf, Hurl the Sheaf (if you don't
know, come and see, you'll be amazed!), cream teas, beer tent and much,
much more, including stalls selling bric-a-brac, home baking, plants
etc. and stalls supporting various charities, including RNLI. The main
fund raising event for the Fun Day is th e Balloon Race so if you come
to Fun Day be sure to buy a balloon (£1). Previous winning balloons
have gone to Humberside, Northern Ireland, North Wales and eastern
Germany!
Those of you who know
Straiton Fun Day will know that each Fun Day has a theme and everyone is
encouraged to dress up according to the theme. There are prizes for the
best fancy dress. Past themes have included Wild West, Caribbean,
Circus, Disney and the chidren at the Primary School are usually
involved in suggesting the theme. This year, the children are going to
choose the theme from options given to them and we hope they will have
decided before Easter. Watch thi space.
A new addition this year will
be a small, select craft fair. In previous years, Pinmore Pottery have
brought a potter's wheel to Fun Day and we hope they will be there as
usual but, for the first time this year, other crafts people will have
stalls at Fun Day. This is being organised for the Fun Day by
SpikyPebble, Straiton's own textile craftsperson. (SpikyPebble won
'Best Newcomer' at the Country Living Fair Scotland 2005.)
Please keep checking out this
page which will be updated regularly until Fun Day.
