Personal History

Mary was from a Low Land Clan, the Black Campbell's of Ayrshire.

 

Arrived per Strathmore c1847.

 

Worked as General Storekeeper 1867 - 1900. Employed with son, 27 Ticket of Leave men 1867 - 1870. When she opened the Dundee General Store in Victoria Street, Bunbury. Her brother-in-law went guarantor for 400 pounds (William Ramsay of Minninup). She also conducted a store in Scotland after her husband’s death.

 

Resided in Ayreshire, Scotland.

 

Was said to be one of the Black Campbell's, a lowland clan, of Ayrshire.

(Verbal information has parents as; Robert Campbell & Agnes Ferguson. However a correspondent from Dundee, researching Hay, believes parents more likely to be Alexander Campbell & Mary Austin as dates match closer, they had a daughter Mary born 1784 in Ayre.)

Arrived Strathmore on 26-03-1863 with son, David Hay. Owned and managed a store in Bunbury, called "Dundee Store", Victoria Street, Bunbury, Western Australia.  Also conducted a store in Scotland. Brother in-law (William Ramsay) stood guarantor to 400 pounds to acquire "Dundee Store". Also had a store in Busselton, WA, with her son.
