Fourteen local people were honoured for their contribution to the quality of life in Maybole at a special ceremony in the Town Hall. Chairman of Maybole Community Council David Kiltie welcomed them and their families and friends to the ceremony for what he described as a very special occasion for the community council. “We are here to pay tribute to a number of very special people,” he said, adding that everyone being presented with a “Scroll of Appreciation” had been nominated by others in the community. more

Could Aladdin find a way to marry Jasmin or would the evil Jafar find the magic lamp in time to become the richest prince in the land and marry Jasmin himself? What do you think?

Last week some members of the Tackety Bit Club went to Glen Afton where they parked the car at the dam and walked round the top of the reservoir and onto Blacklorg Hill. It was a bit misty and quite raw but they went on along the ridge to Blackcraig then down to the road and back to the car by which time it was very wet. The next meeting of the club is on January 5 in the Welltrees Inn at 8 o'clock and new members are welcome to attend. The AGM will be held on January 19 at the same venue.

An evening of carols and readings was held in the Town Hall. It was organised by Maybole Council of Churches and the hall was absolutely packed! The community singing of well known and loved traditional Christmas carols was a joy to hear.  more

When the children of St Cuthbert's performed their Christmas Concert in the school Hall on Tuesday December 20 a little bit of magic came to Maybole. As the children from P1-7 raised their voices in word and song to tell the Christmas story they captivated and entranced their audience filling the air with laughter and joy as the true meaning of Christmas came to life in a magical wee school - St Cuthbert's Primary.

Maybole Council of Churches Christmas Party was held in Maybole Castle.

Presentation of £23,000 to Glasgow Royal Infirmary

Last week a cheque for a massive £23,000 was presented by the Barbara McGill Trust to the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow. Dr RI Russell, Trust Research Adm. The cheque was handed over by Dr Brian Scobie to Dr RI Russell, Trust Research Administrator, at a meeting of the Barbara McGill Trust for Wilson's Disease Research at Altewan Farm, Maybole, home of Trust Founders, Mr and Mrs Thomas McGill.

The £23,000 will fund the purchase of state of the art equipment for the Scottish Trace Element and Micronutrient Reference Laboratory at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow. The provision of this new equipment will provide much improved techniques and ultimately more effective diagnosis and treatment of Wilson's Disease sufferers throughout Scotland.

The Barbara McGill Trust, based in Ayrshire, is the only Nationally Registered Charity promoting specific research into Wilson's Disease. This genetic disorder affects approximately 2000 families in the UK. The Trust was founded in 1986 by Mr and Mrs McGill following the death of their 15 year old daughter Barbara from Wilson’s Disease.

Sufferers cannot make proper use of nutritional copper normally essential to life itself with the resultant excessive accumulation of copper causing serious and often fatal damage to liver and in many cases other vital organs. Sadly, although Wilson's Disease is a family illness and present from birth, there is as yet no simple diagnostic screening test routinely available. If identified at an early age, it can now be effectively treated with lifelong drug and diet therapy, making the development and promotion of an early diagnostic test of supreme importance and the primary aim of the research funded by the Trust at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow.

An entirely voluntary organisation, the Trust relies heavily on the goodwill of its supporters. It is greatly indebted to the good people of South West Scotland. Without the generosity, practical help and enthusiasm of many groups, youth organisations, the business sector and many kind private individuals, the Trust would not be able to fund this vital research. For further information contact: Mrs Jean Kyle, Trust Secretary, Tel: 01465 713083.

The singing and playing by pupils from all our local schools was magnificent, none more so than the choir made up of pupils from Cairn, Gardenrose and our own St Cuthbert’s primary schools. The community singing of well known and loved traditional Christmas carols was a joy to hear.

The evening began with a reading from Matt 1: 18-23 “Angel appears to Joseph” by Rev Douglas Moore, Parish Church which was followed by “Once in Royal David’s City”. Then Marian Davidson, Our Lady & St Cuthbert’s read Lk 1: 46-55 “Mary’s song” which was followed by “Silent Night”.

After Lk 2:1-7 “Birth of Jesus” was read by Dorothy Makin, St Oswald’s, and “Away in a Manger” the three primary schools choir sang two pieces - “Child in a manger” and “Unto us a child is born”.

Next was Lk 2: 8-20 “Shepherds” read by Elaine McVicar, Baptist Church, and “While Shepherds Watch” the a trio from Carrick Academy sang “Peace Peace Peace”.

These were followed by Matt2: 1-12 “The three kings” read by Susan Whiteman, Parish Church, and “We Three Kings”; then Is 9: 2-7 “A child is born” read by Becky Fleming, St Oswald’s, and “Hark the herald angels sing”.

The Parish Church choir sang “Angels’ voices richly blending” prior to the final reading  Is 53: 2-9 “The cross foretold” which was read by Eileen Hamilton, Our Lady & St Cuthbert’s, and then “Oh come all ye faithful”.

Rev Dave Whiteman gave the final blessing before handing over to the Carrick Academy band who played a Christmas selection of tunes which included a soloist singer and trombonist with “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”.

The three primary schools choir finished the evening by singing “Unto us a child is born” again at the end before tea and mince pies were served by Maybole Council of Churches. Rev Whiteman thanked to all who took part, also Mr Dibden and the Academy band, Mr Goudie and singers from Carrick, Mrs Feldman and the three schools choir.

The collection was for Shelter.

The Scottish Women's Baptist federation meeting in Maybole Baptist Church recently was addressed by their guest speaker, Jimmy McInnes who, as well as being Secretary of West Sound Radio Religious Programming Group, is also a popular presenter on the Sunday@Seven programme. He spoke about the background to religious programming on West Sound and also how he had come to be one of a team of presenters of Sunday@Seven. He gave his reasons for being involved in the programme, which has a listening audience each Sunday evening of about 10,000 listeners between 7pm and 10pm on 1035 AM (medium wave). The programme consists mainly of Christian music, chat, competitions and interviews with usually local Christians. There is also the opportunity given to listeners to 'phone in for music requests and/or dedications. A news desk is available to local churches to publicise their upcoming events. Listeners are from a wide geographical area stretching from Glasgow down as far as Carlisle. Jimmy was thanked for his interesting talk by Mrs Elaine McVicar, the wife of Pastor Tom McVicar.
