Carrick Colts under 13 team are in to the last 32 of
the Scottish Youth Challenge Cup after a great win over Salvesen BC
94 last week and on Saturday at 2pm they take on Bonnyrigg Rose at
Maybole in the next round. The game against Salvesen BC 94, a replay
after a draw 2-2 at Maybole. was at Forrester High School Playing
Fields in Edinburgh and the Evening News reported it as a “truly
magnificent game of football”. The game went right to the last kick
of the ball as both teams gave a tremendous display of all that is
best in youth football. Carrick took an early lead in the second
minute when a clearance from a Salvesen defender beat his own
keeper. The home team hit back immediately and had several chances
to get the equaliser but Carrick broke to make it 2-0. In a spell of
end to end football In the ball was cleared off the Carrick line
while, at the other end, they went close to scoring a third with
Salvesen lucky to keep the score 0-2 at half time.
The home side pulled a goal back with a great goal
and again the game went from end to end before Connor Wyllie ran up
the right wing and scored with a tremendous shot to make it 3-1.
Salvesen got back into the game with a terrific second goal and the
final minutes were a bit nerve jangling as they went all out for the
equaliser to force the game into extra time. However, the Colts held
out and won the game to go through. Afterwards, John McKissock said:
"I think we all need pacemakers to calm us down after that. It was a
wonderful game and a credit to youth club football."

Here are some words
from head teacher Liz Miller St. Cuthbert's Primary had a very busy
time this week. Here are our boys and girls of P.1/2/3 in their
Nativity Play "Humph the Camel." The children were absolutely
fantastic. Oh yes they were! The Seniors performed their pantomime,
"Red Riding Hood" on Thursday evening to a packed house of eager
parents and family. It was a tremendous success and the children had
a wonderful time singing and dancing their way through this
traditional story that had a Christmas twist. Our thanks go to the
children, staff, parents and the whole community of St. Cuthbert's
Primary for their hard work and support. Merry Christmas to all!

The Carrick Community
Transport Group is pleased to announce the introduction of two new
17-seat minibuses to the vehicle fleet. Bus 1 is a fully accessible
minibus capable of taking two wheelchairs, this was partially funded
by the RCTI (Rural Community Transport Initiative) a department of
the Scottish Executive. Bus 2, fitted with a tow-bar was, totally
funded by Fairshare, which is funded by the lottery. The CCTG
committee has worked hard over the past year to organise these
grants, without these new minibuses the transport group was in
danger of having to disband. Committee Members Chairperson — Brian
Wilson Vice Chairperson — Kenny Anderson Treasurer - John McCreath
Secretary - Jonny Rusk The project also includes the employment of a
co-ordinator (Jim McDermott) whose main task will be to organise the
maintenance and ensure the minibuses are kept in good condition by
the affiliated groups. Another service to the community will be the
training of drivers to MIDAS level, (minibus driver's awareness
scheme). It is hoped that over the next year all the drivers using
the minibuses will have completed this training. Details of how you
can affiliate to the transport group can be found by contacting Gwen
Campbell at the community education department office on 01655

Maybole United Service of Lessons and Carols This was
held last week in Maybole Town. Readings were by Susan Whiteman, Fr
Stephen McGrattan, Sam Fleming, Elaine McVicar, Rev Dave Whiteman,
Becky Fleming, and Marian Davidson. There was communal singing of
traditional Christmas hymns as well as the adult choir and a
combined choir from the town’s three primary schools under the name
MUSIC – Maybole United Schools in Chorus. The event was organised by
Maybole Council of Churches who last week sent a Christmas card to
every home in Maybole detailing the times of services in individual
churches over the next few weeks.
Cairn Pupil Council members are “Determined To Play!”
The young pupils have ambitious plans to change their playground and
have been trying to raise funds for their project. They want to make
the playground more fun for all the children at Cairn and in the
local community. “We want to make the playground more child
friendly!” said one of them, “and also complete the library
upgrade.” “We would like to buy fantastic new picnic benches to
chill, make friends, and have packed lunches on. “We will put the
benches in good places so all children and parents can use them; buy
new exciting bins to help children to tidy away litter and rubbish;
paint new fun playground games and court lines on the concrete so
everyone can join in and get fit!.
“We would also like to paint wall art on the P1
square’s walls to make the area look more like a garden; and we’d
like to buy or make new planters for the playground so we could grow
plants and bushes to encourage insects and help the environment.”
Other plans would include buying a Trim Trail for all the children
in Cairn and locally to have fun on. It could either be on the grass
or on the concrete with a specially made surface under it. They
believe these changes would help to make life more fun, improve
their environment and be fun for all the community. The spokesperson
continued, “To finish the library from last year’s project we only
need to buy a nice new bin to cheer up the library and buy some nice
cushions to sit on and read!” The pupils have costed the project and
could need as much as £7,000 so how will they fund it? Recently they
presented their plans to the Parents Association, who gave £1,000,
and the school board who donate £900. They already had £780 and the
school’s Determined to Succeed budget of £480 so their total so far
is £3,160.
They are now looking for more donations and are also
enquiring about lottery funding. They would like to present their
plans to the Community Council to appeal for funding from them too.
Orders have now been placed for some of the goods, and they have
contacted the companies that make trim trails. Members of the Pupil
Council are P7/6 Adella McCulloch, Ross Keenan; P5/6 Colin
Brackendale, Rhianna Hamilton; P4/5 Callum Gemmell, Alix Anderson;
P3/4 Shelby Harkness, Keiran Robb. In the photo are also the Carrick
Pupil Approval Board - Callan Scade (Year 3) and Emma McClung (Year
1) - both former pupils at Cairn. They were delighted to see the
school again, and thought the plans were wonderful!
Carrick Speakers Club held its annual St Andrew’s
night in the club last Friday evening. The toast to Scotland was
proposed by Adam Ingram MSP who referred to where we had come from
as Scots and expressed his hopes for the future of the
Scottish nation in an uncertain world. George McEwan proposed the
toast to Maybole using some of the poems he had written reminiscing
about his early life in the town and at Maybole shore. His audience
was very appreciative of his poetry which evoked many memories of
the auld toon! Other contributions to the evening were by Ian
Hewitt, Vic McCreadie, Eddie Reid, Jim Millar, Andy Connelly and
Charlie Reid who are all members of the Speakers Club. Billy Tait,
an old friend of the club, provided the music for the evening. Bill
McCubbin chaired what was generally agreed to have been a memorable
St Andrew’s night celebration.
Maybole Parish Church, in conjunction with Carrick
Round Table, held a St Andrews night concert in Maybole Town Hall
last Thursday 30th November. Hugh Paterson compered the evening and
Rev Dave Whiteman welcomed everyone. Pupils from the town’s three
primary schools made up a 70 strong choir and sang “Red yo yo” and
Coulters candy” led by Kay Feldman and Deirdre Cuthbertson. There
were recitations by Kim McCoy, Shelby Harkness and Georgia Wallace,
“You’rer no getting a dug”; and Louise Martin, Anndi Clark and
Heather Dowie, “A rammy in the close”.
Dancers Rachel and Paisley were accompanied by Ian
Muir on the accordion the Mhairi Gibson sang “Always Argyll” and
“He’s aye kissing me”. Members of the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra
played a medley of Scottish tunes before the interval when wine was
served by the Round Table. The raffle, in aid of Ayr Hospice, was
drawn by Alex Kelly. At the start of the second half the three
schools choir sang “I think I know a man” and “You canny shove your
granny off a bus”. This was followed by a monologue from Jean Dunn
assisted by Margaret Hutchison entitled “Charlie’s wedding”. The
church Choir sang “Mhairi’s wedding”, “The Lord’s my shepherd”, and
“Highland cathedral”. Louise Allen played a medley on the pipes and
Maybole Concert Party sang a selection of Scottish songs before the
evening was rounded of with local favourite Linton McMillan
accompanied by Ian Muir on accordion.
Mr Whiteman gave a vote of thanks and the evening
ended with “Auld Lang Syne”. It was a very successful evening, with
the town hall packed despite the dreadful weather. Almost £1000 was
taken at the door, of which £500 will do to the new church and £500
to the Hospice. The Round Table kindly donated another £1000 to the
evening, again to be split between the two. £300 was raised at the
Raffle and this will also go to the hospice. In all £1000 will go to
the new church and £1300 to the hospice. The committee would like to
thank everyone who supported the evening in any way, especially
Carrick Round Table for the generous donation.
The infant production at Cairn this year was called A
Wriggly Nativity, and all the children from P1-P3 took part, and had
a fabulous time! Mary and Joseph were played wonderfully by Ebony
MacPherson and Ewan Campbell, and the Donkey was played with great
gusto by David Coyne. Our Sparkling Star was played by Phoebe Young
and the very Wise Men were Steven Minnis, Ryan Thomson and Frazer
Scade. All the children took part enthusiastically and the play was
very well attended and enjoyed by all! The upper school
production was more serious, about a homeless woman called Kate, who
was looking for a ' Home for Christmas'. The cast used their
extensive acting skills really well, in this thought provoking tale.
The main characters were Kate, the homeless woman, played by Kim
McCoy and Mum, played by Louise Martin. Shannon Andrew, Chloe MacKie,
Saul Boyd, and Rhianna Hamilton played the main children, who helped
Kate have a happy Christmas. Other homeless people were very
amusingly played by Heather Dowie, Anndi Clark and Georgia Wallace.
There were several solo singers, who sang beautifully - X Factor
beware! Two performances were held of each production, both of which
were extremely well attended, and enjoyed by all. Raffle
ticket sales profits will go towards Shelter, which helps rehome
homeless people The Nursery production was called Born in Bethlehem.
Both the am and pm children took part, and everyone had a great
time! Erin Boyd was Mary, Gavin Ferrol was Joseph and Ryan Sloan
took the part of the Donkey. The production was really well
attended, with over 60 parents keen to see their wee stars in
action! Well Done to all who took part in these super productions
this year!!
Alcohol Circuit Event - Winner of the Mountain Bike
- Hollie Lucas 1R1 This was organised by Community Education and the
Licensing Monitoring group. All S1 pupils attended this circuit
event at Maybole Town Hall on Wed 6 December. It focussed on alcohol
abuse as well other anti-social activities which often go with
underage drinking - graffitti, litter etc. Pupils had to complete a
questionnaire based on information given out to them at the event
and Hollie got top marks. 2 S1/2 Health Promotion -
Week Fruit Challenge Pictured are Eilidh Blondin
and Fiona Campbell of class 1B who are taking part in a Fresh Fruit
Challenge. All pupils in S1 and S2 get a stamp from the dinner
ladies on a special passport each time they buy a piece of fresh
fruit. The pupils who get most stamps over the fortnight will get an
end of term treat with a trip to the Magnum Leisure Centre in
Irvine.
A special memorial service for Amjid Ismail will be
held this Saturday December 9 in the Baptist Church, Carrick Street,
Maybole. The service will begin at 11am and afterwards, at 11.30am,
there will be tea and a buffet in the Town Hall. Everyone is welcome
to attend this “Memories of Amjid” service and the family feel this
would give them an opportunity to thank everyone for their support
since his death a few weeks ago. (At the recent service for Amjid
Ismail there was a special collection for Hansel Village. £700 was
collected and the family will pass this on.)
St Cuthbert’s Primary School held an Open Night last
week to allow interested parents to see round the school and what it
has to offer potential pupils. Parent Mrs Simpson made crêpes
(French pancakes) on the night, which were enjoyed by everyone. The
art & craft club made Christmas cards while everyone was there and
they also had a display of all the things that they have made over
the last few weeks. The guests were also encouraged by the children
to" have a go" at designing and making their own Christmas cards.
P4/5 children performed Scottish country dancing and their rap song.
P1/2/3 sang about being part of one mighty family. P6/7 sang and
performed their dance house routine about discrimination.
Thirteen members of Carrick Academy’s S4 XK Club were
special guests at a ceremony in Maybole Town to recognise their
achievement in producing a DVD highlighting the need for a bypass
for the town. David Kiltie, chairman of Maybole Community Council,
welcomed the pupils, their families and other guests who included
Cathy Jamieson MSP, Roger Stewart, head teacher of Carrick Academy,
Darren Miller, of the Prince’s Trust, and co-ordinator of “xlerate
with xl”, Di McClure, Guidance teacher at Carrick Academy, Carol
George of Community Education, Kirsty Gallacher, Arts Worker,
Margaret Burns, Acting Principal Community Education, South Ayrshire
Council, and local councillors. The pupils had visited the Scottish
Parliament earlier in the year to press the case for a Maybole
bypass. They were invited to Holyrood by Cathy Jamieson who arranged
for them to give a presentation to the Transport Minister, Tavish
Scott, which highlighted why they thought the town needed a bypass.
They attended First Minister’s Question Time before
meeting the First Minister, Jack McConnell, and the Transport
Minister in the Chamber of the Scottish Parliament. The ‘XL’ Club
had produced their own DVD film which makes the case for a Maybole
bypass and presented a copy of the DVD to the Transport Minister and
Cathy Jamieson MSP. Recently, two members of the XL Club, Alice
Mackie and Kerri Barr, attended a meeting of Maybole Community
Council to show the DVD to members. After the meeting with the two
pupils, members of the community council and the Bypass Committee
wanted to mark their work in some way. They were so impressed with
the work of this young group and their sense of citizenship, that it
was agreed to invite all who had been involved with the production
to the Town Hall to present them with Certificates of Recognition.
The certificates were presented by Cathy Jamieson to:
Kerri Barr, Darren Baxter, Stephanie Buchanan, Laura Connelly,
Hayley Elliott, Graham Lees, Fraser Lindsay, Alexander Little, Alice
Mackie, Craig McLure, Shaun Murphy, David Page, and Danielle Urie.
Unfortunately, not all could be there but there certificates were
deliverd to the school the next day. Darren Miller, of the Prince’s
Trust, congratulated the pupils and the work of the XL Club. He said
he recognised their hard work and thought the DVd was fantastic and
added, “I can sincerely say we are proud of you and hope you are
proud of yourselves. You have made an impact on the community - well
done.” He went on to thank Carrick Academy and advisors for their
support for the Prince’s Trust.
It should be a real old “Rock’Roll Christmas” in
Carrick Sports Club on Saturday December 23. Club members and guests
can look forward to local band “The Peas” making a welcome return
following their very successful Buddy Holly night in September and
their sell out night in the Town Hall with Linda Gail Lewis.
Hogmanay will be another big night in the club when the main
attraction will be Maybole Pipe Band performing across the bells.
Other entertainment will be provided by Somethin’ Else, Arlene and
DJDK.
Pearl Barton, chair of Maybole Opportunities in
Retirement group, would like to thank everyone who helped to make
the annual Christmas dinner on Friday evening such a great success.
These include Carrick Sports Club’s steward Willie Parker and his
staff; caterer Lynn Warnock and her staff; Councillor Brian
Connolly; as well pupils from Carrick Academy; and Double A, Alan
and Arlene, for the entertainment. Pearl would also especially like
to thank her OIR committee for all there help
