Shannan Brown Maybole’s Shannan
Brown, 11, has just become a double British champion for disco
dancing. At the recent British Championships at Blackpool’s Winter
Garden Shunny, as she is known to her fellow competitors, won the
under 12 British title in the Solo Section and also the Pairs title
with partner Chloe Parnell from Kilmarnock. Competitors came from
SCOTLAND, England, Ireland, Wales, South Africa and Norway with
Shannan winning from an entry of over 40 in the solo event. She has
been competing from the age of 2 and trains five nights a week and
competes on a Sunday. Earlier this year Shannan won the City of
Aberdeen Championship and in March she travelled to Killarney where
she won the British and Irish Freestyle Masters title. She dances
for Dawn and Shari Turnbull of Ayr and would like to thank them for
all their help. She would also like to thank Gail and Sheila, owners
of Gossip Designs in South Wales for their sponsorship in both Solo
and Slow events. When she is older Shannan wants to be a gym teacher
as well as a dance teacher with her big sister Kayleigh who is a
Scottish freestyle champion at intermediate level.
Cairn Primary's P7 pupils had the chance to learn snowboarding
skills at Newmilns dry ski-slope during the October school holidays.
The trip to Newmilns was organised by Graham McCullough, the Carrick
Cluster Outdoor Sports Co-ordinator. After instruction on how to use
the equipment properly, the Cairn pupils had the chance to hit the
slope and practice how to balance and control their descent.
All of the kids had a wicked time and enjoyed trying this sport for
the first time - and not a broken bone between them!
At last week’s annual general
meeting of Maybole’s OAP Association office bearers elected were:
Pearl Barton, chair; Gillian Durrant, secretary; and Derek Walker,
treasurer. The committee as last year was re-elected. Local police
officers presented a cheque for £300 to the committee who would like
to thank PC John Hammill, Sgt William Gilmour and Inspector Stuart
Gaudin for this. The money will go towards costs for the outing to
the pantomime in December. They would also like to thank everyone
who has donated money and goods to them over the past year. There
was a special presentation to Minnie Gallacher who has been a great
worker for the committee and the OIR committee for many years but
has had to cut back recently due to ill health. The committee wanted
Minnie to know how much they appreciate the work she has done and
that they all miss her.
