Plans are now well in place for a
very special day in Maybole on Sunday June 21.
Thanks to funds from Eventscotland and South
Ayrshire Council, there will be a Homecoming Day and
Market Fair held in the town and surrounding
villages.
Two years ago Maybole marked the
250th anniversary of the wedding of
William Burnes and Agnes Broun in the town on
December 15, 1757. Agnes was resident in the town at
the time and after the wedding the couple moved to
Alloway. On Sunday June 21, the theme will be a
“homecoming” visit of Agnes to Maybole with her
husband and their new son, Robert. |

The fun starts at 10am when three pipe
bands play in the villages. Maybole Pipe Band will play in
Straiton; Irvine Pipe Band play in Minishant and Isle of
Cumbrae Pipe Band play in Maidens. At 10.45am, Maybole play
at Crosshill; Irvine at Kirkmichael and Isle of Cumbrae in
Kirkoswald. At 12 noon the Market Fair opens with 40 stalls
at the Town Hall and Greenside run by local charities,
community groups and specialist craft groups.
There will also be tours of Maybole
Castle, a fairground, a falconry static display, pony rides,
a petting zoo and more. Hopefully, as many people as
possible will be in period costume of the 18th
century. The Homecoming parade starts from Carrick Academy
at 12.45pm led by Maybole Pipe and will be joined by the
other bands on the way to the town centre.
At 1.15pm the three pipe bands will play
together at Greenside and this will be followed by the
crowning of Niall Murphy and Sam Currie, of St Cuthbert’s
primary school, as the Gala King and Queen of Carrick.
Immediately after the crowning ceremony various prizes will
be awarded to the best dressed individuals and groups.
At 1.45pm children’s entertainment begins
and runs in various forms till 3.45pm while at 2.00pm Sky
High Falconry will have a flying display at Maybole Castle
and a programme of entertainment begins at Greenside. Isle
of Cumbrae Pipe Band will play at Town Hall at 2.15pm and
the Gala King and Queen will visit the sheltered housing
unit at Crosne Street and Fairknowe Nursing Home.
At 3pm- Irvine Pipe Band will play at the
Castle and at 7.30pm in the Town Hall there is an extra
special treat. The show starts with Maybole Pipe Band and
then the Red Hot Chilli Pipers take to the stage for their
own brand of entertainment. The Chillis are winners of BBC
1’s primetime show “When Will I be Famous” and were voted
Live Act of the Year 2007 at the Scots Trad Music Awards.
The band is brought to the town by
Maybole Community Association sponsored by Scottish Power
Renewables, and tickets cost £17.50. They are being sold
from June Dunlop’s florist shop in the High Street ( 01655
882210). If you want tickets, you should contact June as
soon as possible as they are already going fast. |
