The author James T. Gray was born in Maybole and spent all his life in the former 'Capital of Carrick'. Coming from a family which had connections with the town dating back 300 years, Mr. Gray was an active member of the community. Estate Factor for the Marquess of Ailsa at Culzean for over forty years, he was also involved in working for the Town Council and held office as Provost from 1951 to 1954. Maybole, Carrick's Capital, is the culmination of James Gray's great interest in the history of
