GETTING YOUNGSTERS ACTIVE. South
Ayrshire Council has secured £29,350 of funding from the Scottish
Executive’s Local Action Funding to introduce “Midnight” Football Leagues
and a Motivational Activity Programme (MAP), to encourage young people to
participate in sports during their leisure time. A total of £9,800 funding
for MAP – not to be confused with the Maybole Access Point project in the
town which is also known as MAP - is enabling multi-sports activity
programmes to be run at
Cairn Primary School, Maybole; Newton Primary School, Ayr and at
Dundonald Activity Centre. Similar activities are scheduled to start in
Tarbolton in January 2005. The remaining £19,550 of funding has enabled
two “Midnight” Football Leagues to be established in Ayr and Girvan. The
Leader of South Ayrshire Council, Councillor Andy Hill saw for himself how
the Motivational Activity Programme is being run when he visited Cairn
Primary School last week. Sports Development Coaches Fiona Picken and
Noelene Grier were encouraging the participating primary school youngsters
- from both Cairn Primary and Gardenrose Primary - in a variety of
sporting activities. Said Councillor Hill, who is also the Local
Councillor for North Carrick and Maybole East: “These types of free
activity projects provide further opportunities for young people to become
involved in physical activities during their spare time. “Projects such as
these benefit those taking part, but are also of great assistance to local
communities, as they help to keep young people physically active, happy
and out of trouble.” He added: “The majority of young people use their
leisure time wisely, having fun and taking part in a wide range of
activities with their friends. However, I really do hope that the very
small number of youngsters who become involved in anti-social or criminal
behaviour, or are tempted to do so, will get involved in the projects and
put their spare time to good use.” The locations for running the programme
were identified as priority areas for extra physical activities following
Council consultation with partners from NHS Ayrshire and Arran. The MAP
programme offers participants the chance to take part in a variety of
sports and physical activities over a ten week period. Incorporated into
the programme will be inputs from staff from Ayrshire and Arran NHS during
a range of health related sessions which will cover a variety of topics
including alcohol and drug abuse and healthy eating. The “Midnight”
Football Leagues started in November and are set to run for 20 weeks on
Friday evenings from 7 pm to 9 pm, at the Whitletts All Weather Surface in
Ayr and the All Weather Surface in Girvan. Football leagues such as the
“Midnight” Footbball Leagues have proved highly popular when run in the
past with young people keen to take part and noted reductions in youth
related crime over the period of the courses. Anyone who would like
further information on the wide range of activities provided by South
Ayrshire Council’s Sports Development Team should log on to
www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/leisure or contact staff on 01292

July 2003. After a temporary appointment at St Michael's Kilmarnock, Fr
Stephen was appointed the assistant priest at St Paul's Ayr before moving
to Maybole to succeed Fr Jim Hayes. Fr Jim had left a note for
parishioners saying,
“Friends,
I cannot begin to say how overwhelmed I have been for the many gifts,
cards, telephone calls and visitors to the door I have received full of
good wishes for my move to Saltcoats. In the last six years and three
months your love and support for me - even when we have sometimes
disagreed with each other - has been marvellous. Your faith, effort and
love of your Church and town community are an inspiration and as your
priest I was very proud to often hear the positive comments made about our
community from our visitors. The support we give to our young people and
children is a treasure that I urge you to continue and to our young people
and children I say, like any parent as your "Father" I wanted the very
best for you and Jesus is the best I could give - remain close to Him
always. One of the charms I shall miss about Maybole is the ability to be
straight talkers - no one ever missed their target - that only comes from
realising you have good, honest and solid relationships with each other -
never lose that!!
I must say a special word of
thanks to our brothers and sisters in the other Churches, to all at our
great wee primary school and of course to the wonderful PPC without whom
much would never have been even done - they have been a true source of
strength and support to me personally. Realising that only God is perfect,
my sincere apologies for any hurt I may have caused any of you. I hope you
may find it in your heart to forgive me. On my side I leave with lovely,
happy and wholesome memories of a community of faith that does itself
proud. I have no doubt that you will support your new pastor, Fr Stephen.
I know he will soon become a very good friend to you all.
God Bless you, one and all.
Love,
Fr Jim”
