THE GARPIN

The Girvan flows from hill to sea
Her many pools are fresh and free,
But none hold memories for me
Like lonely Garpin.

In summer days just after school
We'd head towards the salmon pool
And end up in the waters cool,
Of deep dark Garpin.

The Ayrshire sun though never hot
Reflected bright on nature's spot;
Our childhood troubles all forgot
Within the Garpin.

My boyhood years and youthful friends
Are scattered far with other trends,
Yet still that fleeting river bends
Around the Garpin.

I've swam on many foreign shores
Fought waves where Gunnamatta roars
And yet that wanton voice implores
Me, back to Garpin.

The days of life are fleet and fast
As memory searches for the past
Amidst those waters dreams were cast;
Long since in Garpin.
