Over 300 people gathered in Maybole
town hall on Monday the 13th June to enjoy a Concert in aid of the Maybole
Tsunami appeal. The concert was the brainchild of Kay Feldman, who had
been moved deeply by the television pictures of the terrible Boxing Day
events and she decided that she had to do something about it.. Local
schoolchildren were touched by the events, too, and so it was decided that
a concert should take place in the Town Hall involving the school choirs
of St Cuthbert’s, Gardenrose and Cairn primary schools.
The concert was to be the children's response to the
disaster and originally the idea had been for a small event for the
parents. However, as Kay says “the idea, like topsy, just grew and grew
with other groups in the town expressing their keenness to be involved.
The result was an extravaganza of Maybole talent which was enjoyed by all.
The evening was opened with the three school choirs singing together “win
or lose”, and this was followed by the Parish church choir singing “Scots
wha hae” and a very moving rendition of “Highland Cathedral”. Each school
then sang individually, ably led by Deirdre Cuthbertson; St Cuthbert’s
singing “God loves the outcast” and “Let’s go fly a kite”; Gardenrose
singing “Can you feel the love tonight” and “I’d like to teach the world
to sing”; and Cairn singing “I have a dream” and “Tomorrow”. The first
half came to a close with the Carrick school band playing a medley. The
second half began with the Carrick band and this was followed with a
communal singalong of “The wee Kirkcudbright centipede” and “The jeely
piece” song led by Dave Whiteman and Jim Stevens. Maybole Concert Party
sang an animal fun medley much to the delight of the children, and this
was followed by Maybole Pipe Band playing a rousing repertoire.
The night was rounded off with the three schools choir (as
it has now become known,) singing a song, written for the evening by Kay
Feldman, called “If we join our hands together”. After a vote of thanks
from Hugh Paterson, the ensemble finished with the Clair benediction. Kay
would like to thank all who supported the event and especially the
children for their wonderful contribution. Funds raised on the night will
be added to that already being collected and a total should be known by
next week

Business as normal
for Maybole Access Point MAP in Maybole’s High Street has now celebrated
its 3rd year and although the funding was supposed to end in March 2005,
Christine Kennedy and Cathie Barr are pleased to say that they have
received an extension until end of September and are open for business as
normal. In fact, it looks like there may also be a possibility that they
may receive funding until end of March 2006. Christine told us, “Going by
the number of visitors, the service is still needed, so please keep your
fingers crossed for the project and keep coming in to see us and we will
be happy to help.” She continued, “We are in discussions to take MAP out
to the villages offering as many of our services as possible - except the
photocopier is too heavy to carry! Christine has been asked to a seminar
in Sweden through the British Council to give a talk on the successful
project, which is quite exciting for her but not so for poor Cathie who is
being left to hold the fort. If any further information is required about
MAP, please feel free to drop in and talk to Christine or Cathie.
The prizes in this year’s Jean
Falconer Literary Competition were presented in Maybole Town Hall last
week. Jean’s son George and her mother Mrs Nell Samson attended the
presentation although Mrs Samson feels that this could be her last time
due to her age and health. Once again the competition produced a high
standard of writing among Maybole school pupils and this gave the judges a
very difficult task to pick winners in a competition which commemorates a
founder member of Maybole Community Council.
The judges were Eileen and John Jackson, Junior
competition, and Catherine Czerkawska, senior competition. Mrs Samson
presented the winners Liam Ireland and Paige Campbell with their prizes
and the judges presented the other prizes. Unfortunately, Mrs Jackson was
unable to attend and Mr Jackson said that this would be the last time they
would be able to be judges. Jean was a respected journalist, and her
community council colleagues felt a literary competition was an
appropriate way to remember her.
Chairman of Maybole Community Council which organises the competition
thanked
everyone who had been involved in this year’s competition
and assured them that the part they have played in it is very much
appreciated. He added, “We are grateful for the continued support of all
our local schools and would like to thank all teachers who assist with
this competition.” “We are extremely grateful for the expertise of Mr and
Mrs Jackson over many years,” he continued, “and we would like to thank
them very much for all their help. We also thank Catherine Czerkawska for
helping us this year and also agreeing to do so again next year.”

There was a good
turnout of twenty members when Maybole Golf Club headed to Newton Stewart
for an outing. The weather wasn’t very good though as it was wet and windy
in the morning. It dried up in the afternoon although it was still quite
windy. The morning warm up competition was played over 12 holes and was
won by Gary Steele with a net 42. Runners up were Michael Thomson and
Ramsay Eccles with net 45s. The main competition in the afternoon over 18
holes was for the Dulux Cup and was won by Peter Mclelland with a net 68.
Runners up were Brian Boyd and Kevin Doyle with net 71s. Everyone had an
enjoyable day and thanks go to those who donated prizes. The club would
also like to thank Newton Stewart Golf Club for the use of the course as
well as the meals and facilities provided. The May monthly medal was won
by Alan Brownlee with a net 62. It seemed that heavy rain had put members
off playing but when the rain did stop it turned out a good night with an
excellent score from the winner.
The Tiny Tots
Playgroup meets on Monday and Friday mornings from 9.15am till 11.30am in
the Community Wing at Carrick Academy. The age range is 2 years to 5 years
and anyone interested in enrolling their child is invited to contact the
playgroup manager Arlene Crawford on 07732134413. Playleaders are
Bernadette Gillespie, Tracey Campbell and Gaynor Ward. The Tots are off on
a trip to a farm park at the end of term and will start back on Monday
August 22.
The Old Parish
Church and the West Parish Church buildings will be closing in the near
future. To make sure that the history of both is preserved for future
generations, there has been a proposal that a booklet could be compiled.
If any members have photographs, memories or historical facts that could
be included they are asked to contact Liz Woodburn on 01655 883670. Liz
would also like to hear from any volunteers to form a working party to
edit and prepare the booklet.
Cathy Jamieson MSP
came to Maybole gala on Saturday and turned out to be a winner, too, when
she won a bottle of whisky in the OAP Association raffle. Other main
winners were: Watch, cufflinks and tiepin – Betty; Perfume – M McDowall;
Ladies watch – Joyce Campbell; Continental chocolates – Rina Paterson;
Litre wine – J McGregor. The full list will be displayed in the Town Hall
where prizes can be collected. All tickets had contact addresses or
numbers so the committee will contact those as soon as possible. Pearl
Barton would like to thank everyone who baked for their stall and in total
the Association made £220.
At last Friday’s
meeting of Maybole’s Tsunami Appeal committee it was decided that a raffle
would be organised with prizes from Morrison Wines, McInnes Newsagents,
and other local businesses. Raffle tickets went on sale on Monday night at
the Maybole Schools’ Tsunami Concert and from Tuesday they were available
from the Resource Centre, Maybole Access Point, McInnes Newsagents, June
Dunlop’s and committee members. David Gray of McInnes Newsagents has
agreed to display the raffle prizes. To date, the Maybole Tsunami Appeal
has banked over £3,700.00 from local organisations. In order that a grand
total can be announced after the Gala groups, schools, churches, and
businesses are asked to let the Resource Centre know of any fundraising
they have or are doing.
Over a hundred
Maybole senior citizens had a great day out recently when they went on
their summer outing to the new look Cardwell Garden Centre. The garden
centre lies just off the A770 coast road between Inverkip and Gourock and
is just two minutes from the Cloch Lighthouse. Afterwards they headed for
Largs where the weather was warm and sunny and many of the members enjoyed
sitting at the sea front eating ice cream. Then it off to the Burnbank
Hotel in Ayr for a meal. The committee would like to thank Liddell’s
Coaches, especially the drivers Josie and John’ and the Burnbank Hotel for
a lovely meal. Thanks also go to Helen Sloan, Jessie Campbell, Sadie
Scobie, Betty Falconer and Margaret Connell some of the members who took
part in a recent seven mile sponsored walk from Maidens Harbour along to
Culzean and back again. A special thanks go to Sammy Robertson and Rab
Thomson who also took part in the walk. A total of £300 was raised with
£75 going to the Rotary Club of Alloway who organised the event.
Parishioners at St
Cuthbert's Church in Maybole have decided to form a Justice & Peace group.
Caroline Fox was appointed Co-ordinator and she told us, "The
MakePovertyHistory campaign is a unique opportunity for us to make known
our view that urgent action is needed to eliminate world poverty. The
leaders of the world's richest nations will gather at Gleneagles in July
for the G8 Summit, and Great Britain will take over the Presidency of the
G8. This is our chance to have our voices heard and to challenge and
change some of the injustices that are happening in the world." She added,
" EVERYONE can do SOMETHING!" She encouraged other parishioners to buy and
wear a white armband and send a postcard to SCIAF voting for Trade
Justice. Mrs Fox also invited them to join the Rally in Edinburgh on 2
July. A bus will be leaving Ayr at 8am and returning at 6pm - cost £8
approx.
This year’s competition was sponsored by Maybole
Dental Practice and the rosettes and trophies were presented by Dallas
McGawn, former Vice-president of Maybole Amateur Swimming Club.
Gardenrose PS won the overall trophy and the Boys Relay. Maidens PS won
the Village School trophy and the Girls Relay. Full results
were: CN Cairn, GE Gardenrose, KL Kirkmichael, MS Maidens, CL Crosshill,
SN Straiton.

Some members of the
Tackety Bit Club were on Skye recently and two members set off from the
Youth Hostel in Glen Brittle to climb onto the bealach east of Sgurr
Thuilm and then over Sgurr a` Mhadaidh, Sgurr Ghreadaidh and onto Sgurr
Banachdich. There they met the other three members who had come up coire
na Banachdich. It was a great day with excellent views to the Hebrides,
the Small Isles and the rest of the Cuillin ridge. The next day was very
windy with rain forecast so they went to the north of the Trotternish
Ridge and walked to Quiraing and up to the Table. The views were not very
good as the mist was hanging about and the forecast was right -it did
rain. The next club meeting is on June 23 in the Welltrees Inn, Maybole at
8pm and new members are welcome to go along.
Maybole Women’s Forum recently took part in a sponsored
walk at Culzean which was organised by Alloway Rotary. The ladies raised
£100 for the Forum’s funds and they would like to thank everyone for their
sponsorship.
7th Ayrshire Maybole Cubs and Scouts
pictured at Culzean Castle Scout camp site Maybole Cubs and Scouts had a
great time camping last weekend June 24-26 when there was plenty of
sunshine and fun. The Scouts worked on the Survival badge while the Cubs
worked on their Campers and Nature badges. They also had lots of bases,
grate building, backwoods cooking, a Ranger walk and a visit to the
Castle. The cubs recently raised £85 for the charity Breakthrough Breast
Cancer with a sponsored walk at Culzean. The Beavers (6 – 8 years) and
Cubs (8 – 10 ½ years) are still looking for leaders and helpers when they
start back in September. Anyone interested is asked to phone 882683. They
meet on Monday nights in the Scout Hall, Whitehall Court.

At its June meeting Maybole Community
Council elected it office bearers for the second year of its current three
year term of office. Re-elected were David Kiltie as chairman, Anne Walker
as secretary and Gillian Durrant as Treasurer. Alex Kelly was elected
vice-chairman replacing Peter Mason who had informed members that was not
seeking re-election. The election of office bearers had been postponed
from the annual general meeting held a week or so earlier. Also agreed at
the meeting was the co-option of Karen Simpson to one of the two vacancies
on the community council. There is still a vacant seat in the East ward,
covering the part of the town east of the railway line, and anyone
interested in filling the vacancy is asked to contact Anne Walker, 15
Mochrum Avenue, Maybole. At the AGM the chairman had presented his report
covering the first year of their term of office from 2004 - 2007. “We had
two vacancies to fill in 2004,” said Mr Kiltie, “and co-opted Brian
Connolly, with the other position unfilled. Brian was successful in the
2005 by-election. Unfortunately, Moira Auld has tendered her resignation
and we would like to thank her for her time with us. This means that we
are back to having two vacancies on the Council for the East Ward. He had
gone on to speak about May-Tag Ltd which had been having quite a tough
time and had moved out of the Castle into the new Resource Centre. In
August last year the company changed by forming a close relationship with
Momentum, one of Scotland's leading providers of rehabilitation and
training services. Read
the full report here.
Invitations to a social evening on Friday June 17 are going
out to founder and early members of Carrick Sports Club. The is to
celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Club and there will
be a buffet and entertainment on the night with a special appearance by
Maybole Pipe Band. Due to the fact that some of the club’s records going
back 30 years are a bit sketchy, the Committee would like to hear from
anyone who was involved in the early years and would be interested in
attending this function. If you are interested please contact the
Secretary, Bill McCubbin on 01655 882578. On Saturday June 18 there will
be a buffet and cabaret for current members which will be by ticket only
as numbers are limited. Tickets were available (free of charge) as from
last Saturday and there are still a few left so current members are urged
to contact the Steward, Willie Parker, as soon as possible. The
entertainment will be provided by Lorraine Summers with her vocal comedy
and the musical duo Colours. The pipe band will also be putting in an
appearance during the evening.
Carrick Sports Club’s 30th anniversary celebrations were a
real mix of nostalgia, comedy and good music. The first night was when all
founder members were invited to an evening of memories which began with
club secretary Bill McCubbin welcoming everyone and taking them down
memory lane back to when the club first started.
“It
was the 20th of June 1975 when the year Carrick Speakers' Social Club was
opened and it has been open every single day since,” he opened and
continued:
“1975 was a year of uncertainty and change. In June that year that
inflation was at 25% and North Sea oil came on stream; the Suez Canal had
just re-opened after 8 years; the war in Vietnam had just ended; we had
voted yes in a referendum about staying in the EEC and the cost of
electricity increased by 33%; we were watching Fawlty Towers, the Sweeney
and The Good Life on television and the Bee Gees, Gary Glitter, David
Cassidy and Tammy Wynette were the pop idols of the day.
In
Maybole the swimming pool was built, the town council were no more and
Kyle and Carrick and Strathclyde took over local government. The shops in
our High Street were becoming fewer and the Co-op only had a grocer’s shop
left in the town which was managed by Margaret Campbell who is here
tonight. The carpet factory had just opened and Saracens were taking on
extra staff. The Community Association was formed with Jim Campbell in the
chair and David Kiltie as secretary.
It was in this climate of change that Tom Cook had the idea
that a social club might be a good thing for Maybole. He sold the idea to
the Speakers Club and the rest, as they say, is history.
