The weather forecast had not been
good for Maybole Gala Day last Saturday, but the rain did stay away
thankfully. With the theme of Robert Burns and the 18th century
there were no vehicles in the parade other than the horse drawn
carriage for the Gala King and Queen of Carrick. Maybole Pipe Band
led off the parade from Carrick Academy followed by the town’s royal
couple, local dignitaries, British legion and a number of walking
groups.
At Glebe Park Angus Middleton,
President of the Robert Burns World Federation, officially opened
the gala and then Ross Keenan was crowned King of Carrick by Provost
Winifred Sloan and Sophie McPherson was crowned Queen by John
Haining, who will succeed Mr Middleton as World President later this
year in Winnipeg.
The new king and queen are P7
pupils at Cairn Primary. Their attendants were Gardenrose pupils
William Fleming (Crown Bearer) and Emma Milligan (Lady in Waiting)
and St Cuthbert’s pupils Damian Westran (Crown Bearer) and Paige
Campbell (Lady In Waiting). St Cuthbert’s Primary School was the
best walking group with Maybole Cubs second and Maybole Brownies
third.
The fancy dress competition was
judged by Provost Sloan, Sandra Osborne MP, Cathy Jamieson MSP, and
local councillors, Brian Connolly, Ann Galbraith, Sandra Goldie and
Mairi Low. Fancy dress winners and other competition winners are
listed in the table below.
Children were well catered for by
several performances by Uncle Billy and entertainment was provided
by Maybole Pipe Band, Dunaskin Doon Band, Maybole Concert Party,
Carrick 800, Electric warrior and The Peas.
Mrs Susan Whiteman, chair of Maybole Community Association who
organise the annual event, thanked everyone who took part saying,
“We know the hard work that went into the parade and we would like
to express our appreciation to everyone." Special thanks were
expressed to Sgt Gilmour and local police, and to June Dunlop who
put so much effort into making the 18th century costumes for the
King and Queen and their attendants, as well as many of the costumes
worn by others in the parade. |
