Once again the Jean
Falconer Literary Competition has produced a high standard
of writing from pupils of all Maybole schools. The award
ceremony was held in Maybole Town Hall last week and Alex
Kelly, vice chairman of Maybole Community Council, welcomed
everyone. He introduced Mrs Falconer’s son George and
daughter Julie who presented the prizes this year. Sadly,
their grandmother Nell Samson, who normally presented the
prizes, had died since last year’s ceremony.

Pupils at Cairn Primary love their
new Eco Garden! The fantastic new garden planters were built by a
local joinery company, Johnstone and Kennedy. They built them to a
design by Liam Kennedy, P6, who won a school competition to design
the new garden. BTCV worked with pupils from P1-7 all year on
various Eco Projects - the wildlife garden, the new recycled bottle
greenhouse, the allotment and the new Eco Garden.

On Thursday June 11 a representative
of the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund, Mr John Mitchell,
visited St. Cuthbert’s Primary to accept a cheque for £664. This
fantastic amount was raised by the pupils of P 6/7 who led the
school in a series of fund raising events which took place during
Lent. Mr Mitchell was delighted to receive the cheque which was
presented by P 7 pupils David Welsh, Amy Malone, Lisa McVittie and
Sam Currie. He spoke to the children about the work of SCIAF and how
the money they had raised would have a positive impact on the lives
of children in South America and Africa. Photo - Mr Mitchell

Recently,
Ayr & Prestwick Lions Club had the use of Maybole Charity
Shop and raised £1,400. Now they are putting that money back
into the community in several ways. Last Saturday, June 6,
three members were in Maybole to hand over a cheque for £395
to local OAPs to help towards their annual trip to Castle
Douglas. Our photo shows Lions President Jim Young handing
over the cheque to Pearl Barton just before the bus left for
the trip. Michael Hays, Community Service chairman, is on

children helped them to build. The units will be used to store toys
and bikes outside the school building. more |

What do you do when you think your
school playground is a bit old fashioned and could do with being
freshened up? Well, pupils at Gardenrose Primary in Maybole had some
talks with teachers and parent Victoria Ross has drawn some designs
which the pupils then voted on. Money was raised to buy paint and
equipment and the designs will be interactive and fun. |
|
|
|
The School Pupils Council at
Gardenrose Primary said that they would like the infant playground
painted like the nursery playground. Victoria Ross, a parent and
artist, agreed to support the project and asked pupils what kind of
things they would like. She then drew designs and consulted them on
their favourites. The Parent Council, Determined to Succeed and a
dress down day provided the funding. The main design centres around
a ‘road’ including a pedestrian crossing, petrol station and road
signs. Scooters were purchased for pupils to travel on and South
Ayrshire Road Safety supported the project by providing the safety
equipment and helmets. During the actual painting week pupils,
parents, staff and, pupils from CarrickAcademy all worked together
to create the interactive and fun design which enhanced the play and
learning experience for pupils The "official opening" was on the
afternoon of Tuesday June 9 and pupils are thoroughly enjoying what
they have created. Victoria has two daughters at Gardenrose and
specialises in artwork for children. Samples of her work can be seen

fun officially began with former pupil James Gibson, of Hamilton
Football Club, opening the event. Maybole Pipe Band then started to
play to be followed by local rockabilly band The Peas. There were
pony rides, games, a barbecue, raffles, sweets, craft, books and
DVDs for sale, baking, beat the goalie, bottles, face painting,
golf, tattoos, nails and hair, duck pond, disco dome, a carousel,
inflatable slide, teas and coffees, hidden team, ice cream and
lollies, tuck shop, ttocks - sponge throwing, frog hoopla, a pocket
money stall, bash the rat and more. more |

Two years ago Maybole
celebrated the 250th anniversary of the wedding of William
Burnes and local girl Agnes Broun in the town. After the
marriage on December 15, 1757, the couple went to live in
Alloway where their son Robert was born on January 25, 1759.
This year is the 250th anniversary of that
momentous birth and 2009 has been designated the Year of
Homecoming to mark the event.
So this year Maybole
re-enacted Agnes’ “coming home” to Maybole with husband
William and their baby to join in the fun of a Homecoming
Day and Market Fair funded by EventScotland and South
Ayrshire Council. The couple had first met at a market fair
in Maybole in 1756. On the day they were played by Donald
Kay and Arlene McCreadie.
Niall Murphy and Sam
Currie, pupils at St Cuthbert’s Primary, were officially
crowned as Gala King and Queen of Carrick on Sunday, June 21
at the Greenside. Accompanied by attendants Erin Coyne and
Ryan Wilson, Cairn Primary; and Julie Dalton and Corey
Best, Gardenrose Primary, the royal couple had paraded from
Carrick Academy through the town to the Greenside via
Kirkoswald Road, Whitehall, High Street and Culzean Road.
Maybole Pipe Band had led
the parade which included local groups dressed in period
costume or in topical themes. Irvine and District Pipe Band
joined the parade at the junction with Ladyland Road and at
the Town Hall there was a special addition with William,
Agnes and their firstborn joined the parade. The Isle of
Cumbrae Pipe Band joined the parade at Maybole Castle.
Earlier in the day the
three pipe bands had played in six local villages -
Straiton, Minishant, Maidens, Crosshill, Kirkmichael and
Kirkoswald. The Market Fair opened at noon with over 40
stalls open for business. After the parade arrived at the
Greenside Depute Provost of South Ayrshire Council Mary
Kilpatrick welcomed everyone to this special Homecoming
event and invited Sandra Osborne MP to officially open the
fair.
Adam Ingram MSP then
crowned Niall as king and Cathy Jamieson crowned Sam as
queen, before the winners of the various competitions were
announced. Best walking group were the 1st
Maybole Brownies and St Cuthbert’s Primary School was runner
up.
This year the special
event was spread across three different venues; the
Greenside, the Town Hall and Maybole Castle which was
especially busy for guided tours, a wild bird display, a
petting zoo, pony rides, a bouncy castle, children's stall
and games, Uncle Billy and Sky High Falconry flying display.
Organisers Maybole Community Association would like to thank
EventScotland and South Ayrshire Council for funding the
day; everyone who put so much effort into making the day
such a success, and a special thanks to local police.
At a recent gala
at Maybole Swimming Pool, Alex Meek surprised
Margaret McGawn and presented her with the Matt
Dunnachie Award. Alex Meek, convener of Carrick
Sports Club, said, “This award was donated to
Carrick Sports Club by the family of the late Matt
Dunnachie. The Sports club formed a small committee
to decide on a suitable recipient for this very
handsome trophy on an annual basis. True to the
spirit of Matt it was felt that it would be nice to
recognise people who have worked away in the
background for organisations in the town of Maybole.
Today presented us with the
opportunity to express the appreciation of the
community to one such person. This person was a
founder member of Maybole swimming Club way back in
1976 and is still as active as ever in its affairs.
That is 33 years of loyalty to this organisation!
Through the years, organising events and fund
raising via the Charity Shop have played a large
part in the continuing success of the Swimming Club
and in the life of this person.
A lifelong member of the Glen Kirk
choir and a general attitude of putting others
before self in many aspects of what happens in our
town makes this person the ideal receiver of this
award. To Margaret McGawn we say thank you on behalf
of the whole community and ask you to accept this
trophy as this year's recipient of the Matt
Dunnachie Award.
Saturday afternoon saw the
fourth annual former pupils rugby match played
between Carrick Academy 1st XV and a former
pupil XV. The game took place in glorious
sunshine and was another well contested affair.
The FP side took an early lead with Andrew
Currie scoring a try after a series of forward
drives. The 1st XV hit back straight away with a
fine 60 metre run from scrum half Joe Cree.
Duncan Sturgeon was successful with the
conversion.
The FPs
were determined to win the Challenge Shield for
the first time and again took
the lead after a fine try from Michael Parker.
Colin Sturgeon struck a fine conversion to put
the FP side back into the lead. Once again the
1st XV struck from deep in their own half
and man of the match Joe Cree once again scored
from 60 metres. The younger Sturgeon brother was
once again successful with his kick to give the
1st XV a 14-12 lead.
The second half was another tight affair,
however the FP side scored two tries through
Willam Morgan and Colin Sturgeon, both converted
by Sturgeon. The 1st XV had several chances to
get back into the game but great defence by the
FP side gave them a deserved win.
Mr Brown presented the Challenge Shield to the
FP captain Ewan McKay and his side were clearly
delighted to have put an end to the 1st XV side’s
winning run. The aftermatch barbecue
was a huge success and many thanks must go to
Andy and Shevaune Clark, Dave McGee, John Brown,
Carol and Willie Wyllie and Liz Logan for all
their help in arranging the event.

Carrick Crime Prevention Panel’s new exhibition
unit was launched in Maybole last week. Alex Kelly,
Panel chairman, welcomed representatives from community
groups and funders to the launch at Carrick Academy.
“It is good to see so
many of our partner agencies here today, as well as some
of our funders,” he commented. “I would also like to
welcome Cathy Jamieson MSP who is a great supporter of
Carrick Crime Prevention Panel’s work. “It has taken
nearly three years to get this project up and running
and I am glad to eventually be at this stage. It has
been a very hard task getting all the funding parts in
place but I am pleased and relieved to be standing here
at the launch of the exhibition unit.
“I would also like to
thank Sgt John Hamilton and PC Tom Graham for all the
help and assistance they gave towards filling out forms
seeking funding. “We are the first panel within
Strathclyde force area, if not Scotland, to have such a
valuable unit to promote the crime prevention message to
all the outlying communities within the Carrick area. “I
would like to thank our funders - Strathclyde Police,
South Ayrshire Council, Hadyardhill Windfarm Committee,
Awards for All, Jet Petroleum, William Grant & Sons, and
Ayrshire Leader.
“I would also like to
thank our partner agencies - British Transport Police,
Strathclyde Police, Ayrshire & Arran Health Board,
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, South Ayrshire Council, and
the school nurses who continue to support our substance
abuse awarness events. “I joined the panel 25years ago
and after my second year I was made Treasurer, and four
years later I was appointed chairman and Ian Cannon was
appointed treasurer. Coincidently it is a double
celebration today as this is my 20th year as chairman,
so you can imagine I am thrilled to reach this milestone
and mark it with this launch.”
Mr Kelly then invited
Cathy Jamieson MSP to officially launch the unit which
she duly did after paying tribute to the work of the
Panel and Alex Kelly in particular.
A night to remember.
If you weren’t in Maybole Town Hall on the evening of
Sunday June 21, 2009 then you missed a unique
experience. In the past the town hall has hosted, pipe
bands, rock bands, pop bands, show bands, dancers and
more. But when the Red Hot Chilli Pipers hit the
stage last week, they put on a show that included all
these elements.
A total of 15
musicians and dancers were on stage for over 90 minutes
and what an unforgettable show they put on! The piping
was unbelievable, the drumming fantastic, the keyboard
playing incredible, the guitar playing electrifying and
there was a brass section, too. The Red Hot Chilli
Pipers have performed with The Darkness on the main
stage at T in the Park, won the BBC primetime TV talent
show When Will I Be Famous and have an exciting live
sound and presence.
Band leader Stuart
Cassells, the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional
Musician of the Year 2005 has featured on The Darkness
album 'One Way Ticket to Hell and Back' and on the
soundtrack to the film 'Harry Potter and The Goblet of
Fire'. The group is in demand all over the world for
some of the biggest of events and festivals and for one
night they were in the capital of Carrick. Maybole Pipe
Band led off the concert and were in fine form
delighting the audience with some traditional tunes.
Organisers Maybole Community Association would like to
thank Scottish Power Renewables for sponsoring the
event.
Recently, Ayr & Prestwick Lions Club had the use of
Maybole Charity Shop and raised £1,400. Now they are
putting that money back into the community in several
ways. Last Saturday, June 6, three members were in
Maybole to hand over a cheque for £395 to local OAPs
to help towards their annual trip to Castle Douglas. Our
photo shows Lions President Jim Young handing over the
cheque to Pearl Barton just before the bus left for the
trip. Michael Hays, Community Service chairman, is on
the left.
The Club will also be
donating to the Chest, Heart and Stroke Club and
Gardenrose Primary. Stuart Hudson, Secretary and PRO,
said, “All monies raised by the Lions is put back into
the communities at home and abroad. “Lions Club
International is the world’s largest service club
organisation with 1.4 million members who are active in
almost 44,000 communities around the globe.”
Pearl Baton and the committee would
like to thank the Lions Club for their donation and also
John Jamieson, local business, who also donated to the
funds for the trip.
Following their recent donation of £395 to local OAPs to
help towards their annual trip to Castle Douglas,
members of Ayr & Prestwick Lions Club were back in
Maybole last week. They visited Gardenrose Nursery
with cabinets which the children helped them to build.
The units will be used to store toys and bikes outside
the school building. Until now each time they finished a
session the equipment had to be carted round to the
front entrance of the school, which took time so it was
left outside till the end of school each day and
sometimes went missing.
No other funding was
available, so the Lions Club stepped in and made a
donation to cover the costs and members gave their time
to install the storage units at the school. They have
also donated to Maybole Chest Heart & Stroke Club, the
Parkinsons Society and Ayrshire Cancer Support. The
Lions raise funds to help causes such as this, and their
next fundraiser to top up their Charity Account is the
Dundonald Highland Games in August.
"If you're going to
visit Crosne, be sure to wear some flowers in
your hair" to adapt a famous song from the Sixties.
Every two years Crosne, Maybole’s French twin town,
invites everyone to visit for their Pentecost Carnival
and this year the theme was “Hippy” hence the flowers
and bright clothes in our photos.
Margaret and Alex
Davidson travelled there for the weekend festivities and
were joined by twinners from Belgium and the Czech
Republic whose party consisted mainly of young people
ranging in ages from 9 to 15. They had a full day in
Paris on Saturday taking in all the sights as well as a
cruise on the River Seine on the famous Bateaux Mouches.
Unlike the carnival
parade two years ago, when it was wet all weekend, this
year was excellent weather and the Crosnois had floats,
dancers, bands and many associations and clubs taking
part in the hour long parade. This culminated in
entertainment in the Parc Anatole France which was also
the venue for a dance in the evening. A magnificent
fireworks display at 11.30pm was attended by local
families and visitors to Crosne from all over France
especially for the Carnival.
On Monday an informal
picnic in the Parc Henri Hurt took place at which all
hosts and visitors coul relax knowing that all the
excitement was over for another two years. Many of the
Crosnois have happy memories of previous visits when
Maybole Pipe Band led the parade. They hope a larger
Maybole contingent will be able to help them celebrate
again in 2011 which will be the 30th
anniversary of the very first contact between Maybole
and Crosne. year's time.................... Also I
forgot to tell you that there were 4 Belges there who
also paraded.
Once again the Jean Falconer Literary Competition
has produced a high standard of writing from pupils of all
Maybole schools.
The award ceremony was
held in Maybole Town Hall last week and Alex Kelly, vice
chairman of Maybole Community Council, welcomed everyone. He
introduced Mrs Falconer’s son George and daughter Julie who
presented the prizes this year. Sadly, their grandmother
Nell Samson, who normally presented the prizes, had died
since last year’s ceremony.
Elizabeth McCrindle, one
of the judges, was unable to attend the award ceremony but
sent a note which Mr Kelly read out. She wrote, “I was
delighted to be invited, once again, to judge this
competition although it is very sad that Mrs Samson is no
longer with us. She was such an enthusiastic supporter of
the event and her presence made it such a special occasion.
“I want to begin by saying how much I enjoyed reading so
many good essays and it was a pleasure to see how well
presented they were. “It is always a difficult task to
decide the winners and this year was no exception. However,
I decided my guidelines would be - interesting and unusual
facts, a personal slant, well constructed sentences and
descriptive vocabulary.
“After the first reading,
I set aside those who kept to the remit of Homecoming
and not, as some did, simply describe the town of Maybole;
however good the descriptions were. “Also, I was attracted
to the ones who covered not just Maybole but the Carrick
area. It will be a point of disagreement, but I prefer
essays which don't have too many sub headings. “The overall
winner lived up to my expectations and I offer my warmest
congratulations to her. She was closely followed by the
second and third prizewinners - very well done.
“I was left with a number
of very good efforts and deciding who should be highly
commended was one of the most difficult tasks. However, as
in most adjudications, it came down to my personal
preference, so well done to these pupils. “To those who
didn't feature in the prize list this time, please don't
give up on your writing and your obvious pride in your town,
area and country - it could be your turn next time. “May I
add that some of our local businesses should consider
employing some of you as PR consultants because you have
given them such glowing reports and wonderful publicity.
“If you haven't yet met
anyone who has come home to our area then I hope you will
before the year is out. I met someone last week who is home
from Australia and she has received her Homecoming
Certificate. “My thanks to the schools for encouraging and
helping the pupils to achieve so much. Thanks, also, to all
involved in arranging the competition.”
The winner of the Primary
School Award was Chloe Cuthbert, of Cairn Primary, with
runner-up Rachel Campbell, of St Cuthbert's Primary, and
Alison Ronald, of Gardenrose Primary, in third place.
Highlv Commended were Caitlin McNeish, Cairn
Primary; Rhianna Hamilton, Cairn Primary; Megan Collie,
Gardenrose Primary; David Welsh, St Cuthbert's Primary; and
Amy Malone, St Cuthbert's Primary. In the Secondary School
Award the winner was Eilidh Blondin, runner-up was Heather
Kerr and third was Kieran Cannon. All three are pupils at
Carrick Academy.
Norman Paton, an English
teacher at Doon Academy, had also sent a note in which he
said, “In 3rd place was ‘Kieran's rock’. A topic I am hugely
interested in and didn't realise I knew relatively little
about. Good selection of detail and very well presented. I'm
very impressed with the inclusion of the iconic images — it
underlines the knowledge you have of the subject. “2rd place
went to ‘Heather's horsemeat.’ An unusual but topical
subject. Well researched, well written and beautifully
presented. Food is something I have a big interest in but it
is all too easy to ignore animal welfare issues. A great and
important job done.
“In 1st place is Eilidh's
report on self-harm. An informative and sensitive report
about a much ignored issue. Technically, this piece
demonstrates very accomplished writing skills. I think, were
this published, it would be incredibly useful to many people
and this is what sets it apart from the other entries.” The
competition is organised annually by Maybole Community
Council and Mr Kelly said, “Maybole Community Council would
like to congratulate all of this year's prize winners and to
thank everyone who entered the Jean Falconer Literary
Competition 2009.
The competition has been
held annually since 1988 and for many years our judges have
consistently praised the high standard of writing - even if
this has made their decisions very difficult! We are
grateful for the continued support of all our local schools.
“The contributions from
Cairn, Gardenrose and St Cuthbert's Primary Schools are very
much appreciated and we offer our thanks to all teachers who
assist with this. The late Jean Falconer was a founder
member of Maybole Community Council in 1977, and played a
key role in its formation over a number of years. When she
sadly died, members wanted to remember her in some way and
it was felt that a literary competition would be the most
suitable way. “ Special thanks are offered to our judges
Elizabeth McCrindle and Norman Paton, for their time and
expertise, and Carrick Crime Prevention Panel for their
sponsorship.”
On a
day of brilliant sunshine, hundreds of local people turned
out last Saturday for a “Family Fun Day” organised by
Gardenrose Parent Council which raised £1,900. The fun
officially began with former pupil James Gibson, of Hamilton
Football Club, opening the event. Maybole Pipe Band then
started to play to be followed by local rockabilly band The
Peas.
There were pony rides,
games, a barbecue, raffles, sweets, craft, books and DVDs
for sale, baking, beat the goalie, bottles, face painting,
golf, tattoos, nails and hair, duck pond, disco dome, a
carousel, inflatable slide, teas and coffees, hidden team,
ice cream and lollies, tuck shop, ttocks - sponge throwing,
frog hoopla, a pocket money stall, bash the rat and more.
The committee would like to thank all those who have
contributed by means of sponsorship or donations to secure
“The Family Fun Day” for 2009.
Special thanks go
to:-Maybole Pipe Band, The Peas, Carrick Round Table for
donating burgers for the barbecue, J. Ian Gillies,
Solicitor, 70 Fort Street, Ayr, Emergency Services, Ayr
United, Morrisons, Beauty Image, Malin Court, Marks &
Spencer, Pebbles Spa, Asda, Loudoun Castle, Taylor Manning,
Odeon Cinema, MacDonald Brothers, Grants Whisky, The Ranch,
Helen Johnston – hand painted card/notelets to sell, Danny
Kennedy – Shows, Trees Farm - Pony Rides, all the local
businesses that contribute to other events throughout the
year.
Pupils at Cairn Primary
love their new Eco Garden! The fantastic new
garden planters were built by a local joinery
company, Johnstone and Kennedy. They built them to a
design by Liam Kennedy, P6, who won a school
competition to design the new garden. BTCV worked
with pupils from P1-7 all year on various Eco
Projects - the wildlife garden, the new recycled
bottle greenhouse, the allotment and the new Eco
Garden.
The school would like to
thank Lowmac Alloys, who provided the top soil for the
planters free of charge, MGM Timber and Caldwell Wright and
Co. for supplying the wood and the fixings at a very good
rate. The planters were filled with lovely plants from
Nurseries Direct, after painting the green preservative on.
Pupils from all over the school, and the Eco Warriors after
school club, planted all the plants with great enthusiasm,
and are helping keep them watered.
Awards for All Lottery
funding, and funding from the Naturesave Trust helped pay
for the lovely new garden, and the plants. Pupils and staff
are delighted with it all, and the children are already
enjoying having a beautiful space to play in at playtime,
and make the most of the lovely weather in! The hope is that
all the pupils and the local community will enjoy this new
garden!
Carrick Academy Rugby
Awards
Carrick Academy held their second annual rugby prize-giving
on Tuesday 16th June. We were delighted to have
Mr and Mrs Goodwin, Mr and Mrs McComiskey, Mr and Mrs
Alexander, Sharron Carmichael from the RAF and Damien Kelly
(South Ayrshire Development officer ) in attendance. Over
140 pupils were also at the event.
Mr Brown welcomed everybody to the event and spoke about how
much rugby is now part of school life at Carrick Academy. He
stated that without everybody’s hard work we would not be
one of only fourteen schools in Scotland to receive the SRU
Gold Award for Rugby Development.
Everybody then watched photo clips of the past season that
Mr Reilly had put together with background music. This was
highly entertaining and everybody enjoyed this part of the
event.
It was then time for the captains of each side to say a few
words. The standard of pupil speaking was of the highest
quality, a fact that all the invited guests commentated on
afterwards.
The vote of thanks was given by School Rugby Captain Michael
Paton. He thanked all the sponsors and coaches for all their
support throughout the season and presented a gift to Mr
Brown for all his hard work throughout the year. Mr Brown
was clearly touched by his kind words.
The event was once again a great success and the hospitality
that was organised afterwards just rounded off
