Last Friday Cathy Jamieson MSP
handed over a copy of the long awaited Maybole bypass route plans to
Peter Mason, chairman of Maybole Community Council, and members of
the town’s Bypass Committee. Following a request under Freedom of
Information legislation, the Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley MSP
has secured copies of technical reports into the proposed routes of
the much needed bypass for Maybole. The MSP has continued to press
the Scottish Executive and make representations on behalf of local
bypass campaigners.
The extensive information acquired
by Cathy Jamieson shows that significant work has been undertaken
into three different routes to the north of the town. Cathy Jamieson
MSP said: “This is another step forward in the bypass campaign. We
have now secured copies of the full technical report into the
proposed routes for the bypass. All the groundwork has been done and
it’s now up to the Transport Minister to decide if the people of
Maybole are to get the bypass they have been campaigning for. “These
reports, which I had to secure under a Freedom of Information
request, should now be studied by the local community and I have
handed over copies to Peter Mason, Chair of the Maybole Bypass
Committee.
“Transport Scotland have advised
me that the Minister will make a decision in the summer of 2008.
However, as the budget is currently being prepared I have urged the
new administration to take the decision to go ahead now.” Peter
Mason commented, “I am delighted that at long last I am now in
receipt of the second phase of the study for a bypass for Maybole.
“This report is very detailed and shows the preferred route for the
bypass which is to the west of the town. “I will be calling a
meeting shortly with the Bypass Committee to look at the report in
more detail and it will be my proposal to have a display in the town
for everyone to see and add their comments. . This is the news the
residents of Maybole have been waiting for and all our hard work has
been worthwhile.” More about the history of the

ByPass.
Bypass meeting
Report Maybole Community Council’s Bypass Committee met last week to
consider the proposed plans for a route round the town. Peter Mason
tols that the members delighted that the latest report on the bypass
has been produced. He added, “All members had an opportunity to
study the plans in detail, and all agreed that this is a very
comprehensive report going into great detail on all aspects of the
route of the bypass.
“The report goes into detail as to the route, air
quality, flora and fauna, driver stress, wildlife, watercourses and
so on.” He said, however, that some members of the public are under
the impression that this is the final step, and the work on the
bypass will be starting next year. “This is not the case,” he
emphasise, “as much as we would like it to be true. “The information
that we have is that the roads minister will be making an
announcement in July of next year. We have this report and would
like the roads minister to make an announcement now. “To this aim,
we have agreed to contact the minister and invite him to Maybole to
see for himself the dangers of the A77 passing through our town.
“We have also agreed to contact our local list MSPs
to enlist their support to push for any earlier announcement date in
our quest for a bypass. “We have also learned that there are
European funds being spent to improve tourist routes between
Northern Ireland and Scotland, and on this issue we are going to be
contacting our MEPs to gain more information. “We have agreed to
hold a public display in the town hall, over a two day period, early
in the New Year to allow all interested parties to view all the maps
and other technical details that we have. “The case for a bypass for
Maybole is now no longer a dream, but a fact. We are not saying that
work on a bypass is going to start next week, but we are saying that
a bypass for Maybole is now a reality, and are going to be pushing
again for an early start date.
It was in December 1757 that the
parents of Robert Burns were married in a church in Maybole. Next
month that event will be commemorated 250 years later with a weekend
of concerts, a wedding re-enactment and a united service. On Friday
December 14 the Town Hall will host a concert by local young people
from Cairn, Gardenrose and St. Cuthbert’s primaries and secondary
pupils from Carrick and Queen Margaret Academy. On Saturday December
15, the actual 250th anniversary of the wedding of Agnes Broun and
William Burnes, the marriage will be re-enacted at the Collegiate
Church which would have been there at the time. Agnes, William and
the wedding party will be in period costume and “married” as they
would have been in 1757. Then the wedding party will be piped to
Maybole Castle for celebratory wedding meal. Saturday evening will
be a cabaret style concert in the town hall with lots of local
talent on display. Period costumes are available from “Access” in
Maybole High Street for local people who want to dress up for any of
the occasions.
Just call in and ask for details.
Linda Gail Lewis is heading back to Carrick to
play with local band The Peas. Linda Gail is coming straight from
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, where she is
performing at an award ceremony in honour of her legendary brother
Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry Lee is being presented with an American Music
Masters Award----this is an award that is given to an artiste who
has changed or influenced music throughout their life. Previous
recipients have been Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Hank Williams among
others. This is the first time that a living artist has been
honoured. Des Johnston told us, “Linda Gail really enjoys her gigs
here, the reception she receives is wonderful-----when interviewed
recently in the States she has highlighted her shows here as among
the best in the world. “She also rates The Peas as one of the best
backing bands she has ever worked with---great musicians who are
world class----not bad for the local boys to receive such praise.”
The Peas are Davie Anderson, Michael Andrew, Gavin Loch and Jimmy
Murdoch and they had a great time last year with Linda Gail. “The
Queen of Rock and Roll”, as Des Johnston describes her, was
accompanied by her daughter Annie amd last year’s show was a sell
out weeks before the event, so anyone wanting tickets is advised to
get them early. This year, Jerry Lee Lewis’s wee sister is
performing at the Crosshill Arms on Friday November 16 and Saturday
November 17, 8 til late. Ticket, price £10, are available from: The

Maybole One Stop Shop staff are hoping to take
advantage of your generous nature in the run up to Christmas.
Gillian Anderson, Project Manager, told us, “If members of the
public are like me and prefer to shop online rather than brave the
sharpened elbows and swinging handbags of the late night shopping
stramash, they may be able to help us raise some funds. “If they do
their shopping via this link
http://www.buy.at/moss which they could bookmark, or even
make their homepage. Maybole One Stop Shop will receive a
percentage of what is spent, directly from the retailers who
subscribe to the site. “They include companies like John Lewis, HMV,
Tesco, Asda and Marks and Spencer, so there's plenty of choice and
the percentage we receive varies from 2% to 12%. “There will also be
access to special offers through the site that aren't available on
the High Street. “The best bit is that it won't cost you a penny,
and you can do your shopping with a glass of wine and without sore
feet!” Gillian hopes everyone will consider supporting Maybole One
Stop Shop.
Members of Carrick Sports Club were treated to a
great night of nostalgia last Friday when the legendary Tommy
Truesdale and The Sundowners rolled into town to entertain them.
From his first song, the Fats Domino number “Be my Guest”, Tommy had
the measure of his audience and continued for over four hours with
his mix of rock’n’roll and country music. Like many members, Tommy
goes back a long way. After winning several talent contests, he was
invited to join the Joe Duffy Rock 'n' Roll Band in 1959. He was the
vocalist with The Andy Curry Big Band in 1961. In 1963, Tommy formed
his backing group The Sundowners. Throughout the '60s, Tommy played
venues all over the UK and appeared on several TV shows including
"One Night Stand" hosted by Pete Murray. In the 1970s, Tommy
continued to work throughout the UK and appeared in a weekly TV spot
in "The Best Disco In Town". He was invited to join Isla St Clair in
an acting role in the Award-winning TV series, "The Story and the
Song" playing the Ploughman Laddie and the Blackleg Miner. In the
80s, Tommy moved into the Country Music circuit and was voted
Scotland's top country vocalist by The Scottish Country Music
Fellowship in 1989/90. Throughout the years, Tommy has recorded five
albums, three extended plays and eight singles on various labels. He
became one of the original presenters with West Sound doing his
Golden Oldies show on Saturdays and his Country Music show on
Sundays. He still presents The Tommy Truesdale Country Show every
Sunday between 2pm and 5pm. The Sundowners are Lead guitar- Eric
McLachlan, Bass guitar - Mike McDonald, Keyboards - David Reid, and
Drums - Jimmy Gibson.
Cairn Eco Friendly Fun with BTCV Pupils in the Cairn
Primary Eco Warriors after school club, the Eco-Committee and the
Pupil Council all had a fabulous time last week planting 250 bulbs
in the grass areas of Cairn Primary! Julie and Elspeth from BTCV
(British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) visited the school and
worked with the children, showing them how to dig with a spade and
plant naturalised bulbs, to encourage more wildlife. They also built
a big log pile to encourage insects in the garden areas and made
hanging apple feeders for the birds, which now hang magnificently
from the trees at the foot of the garden. BTCV will be working with
the children for around 18 months, and plans include building
butterfly garden planters, a greenhouse made entirely of recycled
plastic bottles, and a bird feeder station. The pupils would like to
offer huge thanks to Julie and Elspeth from BTCV - they just can’t
wait!
Cairn pupils trip to the graveyard On Wednesday
November 21 pupils from Cairn P7 went to the old graveyard at the
bottom of the Kirkwynd in Maybole. They were searching for
gravestones of people alive in Maybole during the life of Robert
Burns. Georgia Wallace told us, “When we got there we had a treasure
hunt. We got into pairs and were given a clipboard with a map of the
graveyard and a picture. The pair each had to find the pictures and
mark it off on the map. Each gravestone had its own pattern - it was
really cool. The best part of this was that each pair worked
together.” The children found out about the different symbols on
headstones and that the size of the memorials can indicate the
wealth or importance of that person. The pupils now know the
importance of remembering the past and different ways they can do
it.
Friendship Links. Last week P4 and P5 from Cairn
Primary School welcomed P4/5 from neighbouring school, St.
Cuthbert's Primary, to join them for lunch and an afternoon of team
building and problem solving. Cairn Head Teacher, Mrs McDougall
said, "I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to invite St.
Cuthbert's to meet up with boys and girls from Cairn, everybody
thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and we hope to repeat it again in
the near future." Liz Miller, Head Teacher at St Cuthbert’s said,
“As part of our friendship links with Cairn Primary School, and to
follow on from the success of the Anti-Sectarianism campaign of last
year (United), the primary 4/5s from each school got to together at
Cairn Primary on Wednesday, to take part in an afternoon of team
building and collaborative learning.” Teaching Staff from both
schools invited, sports coordinators, parent helpers and other
members of staff to join in the fun afternoon giving the children
the opportunity to meet new friends and to strengthen the links that
are well established between the two schools. Both schools have
plans to continue these links in the New Year with similar
activities being organised. Mr Miller added, “ It is our hope that
through these activities, the friendships that the young children of
Maybole make with each other will continue as they become young
adults.”
The 7th Ayrshire Scout Group is carrying out its
annual Christmas card delivery in Maybole again this year. The cost
is only 15p per card and boxes are available at the Bank of
Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Rent Office, the Health
Centre, Rosebank and Dailly Road Store. Any parents or friends who
can help with sorting the mail and providing supervision is asked to
contact Len and Jackie Boughen on 01655 882683. The group is
grateful for all the help it gets and is aware that those who help
them have their own festive season preparations as well. There is so
much to do and so little time to do it. In view of this, readers are
asked to note that the last collection date from all boxes this year
is prior to closing time on Friday, December 14. The group asks that
cards are posted as early as possible to avoid disappointment. They
thank everyone for their support and hope everyone has a happy
Christmas.
Carrick Chess Club has played the first home match
against Prestwick and won 3.5 - 2.5. They needed an extra place
because Steve Hilton is semi-blind and uses an extra board which he's
allowed to touch whilst thinking about his moves. Athol Macgilchrist
made Steve’s moves on the normal board, so that Eric McKinnon didn't
have to make them himself for black. However, Eric also had to call
out his moves and Steve called out his moves twice each time he made
a move - once for Eric's benefit, once for his small recorder. It
was a pretty unusual experience. Results: Eric McKinnon 0-1 Steve
Hilton; Siegrun Macgilchrist 0-1 Michael Harkins; Kenny Brooksbank
1-0 Ian Nelson; Ali Roy 1-0 Gary McPheator; Steell McFadzean 1/2
Jamie McGranaghan; John Shevlin 1-0 John Dement. Photo 1 : The young
people who are members of Carrick Chess Club are keen to help each
other to improve. Here are most of them: Scott Tudhope, Peter

A Maybole club that was formed in
1896, then disbanded in 1954 has been re-formed. A meeting to
re-constitute Maybole St Crispin Burns Club was held in Carrick
Sports Club last Thursday, October 25, which by coincidence was St
Crispin’s Day! St Crispin is the patron saint cobblers, lace
workers, leather workers, shoemakers, tanners and weavers – all of
whom are part of Maybole’s history. The meeting was attended by John
Haining, President of the Robert Burns World Federation, and
Margaret Morrall, President of Ayr Burns Club.
David Kiltie welcomed everyone, in
particular Mr Haining and Mrs Morrall, and paid tribute to Angus
Middleton, Immediate Past President of the Robert Burns World
Federation, for his support for previous “Robert Burns – where it
began” events. He added, “It is fairly safe to say that, had it
not been for the market fair held in Maybole High Street in 1756
where William Burnes met and fell in love with Agnes Broun,
Scotland’s National Bard might never have existed. “William and
Agnes married in Maybole on 15th December 1757 and just over a year
later, on 25th January 1759, Robert was born in nearby Alloway.”
Mr Kiltie also thanked Carrick
Sports Club for allowing the meeting to be held in their Burns
Lounge. The Sports Club was originally formed as Carrick Speakers
Social Club; the Speakers Club formerly met in the Kings Arms Hotel
where Robert Burns had attended an evening held in his honour in
1786 when he had visited Maybole to collect monies from the sale of
his first book of poems.
Mr. Kiltie gave a short history of
the original Maybole St. Crispin Club which met in the King’s Arms
and of the “Robert Burns – where it began” project - past and
future events. These events have been a partnership between the
community council, the community association, the historical
society, and May-Tag who took on the financial and organisational
aspects.
Events have included a Market
Fair, re-enacting that first meeting of William and Agnes; a Robert
Burns literary competition for schools, with the winner being
awarded the Jean Falconer Literary prize; an ecumenical service at
Crossraguel Abbey, when hymns were sung to Burns tunes; a quiz held
in Carrick Sports Club on the theme of Burns and Scottish culture;
Maybole gala day, with an 18th century and Burns theme, when the
then President of the Robert Burns World Federation, Angus Middleton
and the then Vice President John Haining attended..
In December of this year – Friday
14th Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th there will be concerts featuring
the music and poetry of Burns, a re-enactment of the wedding of
William and Agnes, and a service in the Town Hall. There will also
be a DVD made of all events and a book of photographs with the Burns
heritage included. Mr Kiltie said he felt this was a great
opportunity to pass on the town’s heritage to local people,
especially young people. With modern technology and the Internet the
whole world could get to know that the chance meeting of William
Burnes, of Alloway, and Agnes Broun, of Maybole, in the High Street
was the real beginning of the immortal story of Robert Burns.
Due to this year’s activities
there had been discussion on forming a Burns Club in the town. It
had been pointed out that Maybole had a Burns Club – Maybole St
Crispin Burns Club – which had been made a member of the World
Federation in 1927 (Federation number 369). It has also been a
member of the Ayrshire Association of Burns Clubs. This club had
been inaugurated in 1896. Mr. Haining then addressed the meeting
welcoming the invitation to be present and encouraging everyone to
re-establish the Club. He intimated that if the Club is
re-established, it would get back its original number 369, and he
would be delighted to return to present the certificate of
membership.
Mrs Morrall then addressed the
meeting, emphasising her involvement with young people. She
presented the meeting with a Visitors’ Book as a gift from Ayr Burns
Club. Mr Kiltie thanked both speakers and asked if there were any
objections to re- forming Maybole St. Crispin Burns Club. There
being none, a proposal to reform the Club was made by Mr Hewitt and
seconded by Mr Hastings. Mr. Kiltie informed members that the World
Federation membership fee of £46 plus a £10 payment to re-affiliate
had been offered to be paid by May-Tag Ltd, which offer was accepted
by the meeting.
Office Bearers elected were David
Kiltie, President; Alistair Hastings, Vice-President; Bill McCubbin,
Secretary; and Ian Hewitt, Treasurer. Margaret Davidson, Jim Millar
and Grant Kidd were unanimously elected as members of the Committee.
It was agreed that membership fees will be discussed by the
Committee and that membership would be open to all.
Maybole Community Council is
involved in quite a number of activities and Peter Mason, chairman,
is keen to hear from local people what they think his members should
be making a priority. “These activities range from the bypass
campaign, a project in partnership with other local groups to
promote the Robert Burns connection to the town, community
transport, crime prevention, Remembrance Day, biodiversity, and
common good land,” he said. “As a community council,” Mr Mason
added, “we believe in full consultation with the public and would
like to hear any views on these activities.” He added, “Recently
South Ayrshire Council allocated us £4.000 through their civic pride
budget and this year we would like to spend this money on Christmas
lights and a town enhancement report. “Because of the time scale
this year, we have had some consultation with members of the public.
But next year we feel that we should open this out to
hear more from them. “Anyone who wants to let us know their point of
view or has an idea on how this money should be spent is asked to
contact us.” Mr Mason continued, “We are now starting talks with
other community councils in North Carrick on wind farms, which may
or may not come, but if they do we must be prepared for them as a
great deal of moneys may be coming into our area.”
On the bypass campaign Mr Mason said that he had
received information that the STAG 2 report is now available but he
has not seen a copy as they seem to be very rare. “I have been told
by Cathy Jamieson MSP that STAG 2 has been published,” Mr Mason
said, “but, unfortunately, I do not have a copy. “I have asked all
the relevant government departments for a copy of the report, and
have been assured that it will be on the Internet shortly. “This is
great news for all residents of Maybole as this is one step closer
to our long awaited bypass. As far as I know the only thing that we
are now waiting for is a start date. “As soon as it has been
published, our Bypass Committee will study it and keep everyone
fully informed on progress. “I still ask the question - why the
delay on publishing this most important document?”
Mr Mason said that the community council has also
requested a meeting with Amey who have responsibility for the A77.
“We want to discuss various matters with them including the 30mph
signage at both ends of the town that rarely work, the decision to
ban shop keepers from advertising on the pavement outside their
shops,” he said. Amey have allocated a liaison officer which means
that the community council can deal with him directly and the hope
is that this will mean they don’t get passed from one department to
another. Brendan Corish, who is the Network Liaison Officer, has
contacted Mr Mason saying, “As you are aware Amey manage and
maintain trunk routes on behalf of Transport Scotland. “As a matter
of protocol I contacted the A77 Route Manager at Transport Scotland,
Tom Devine, and he and I will be pleased to attend a meeting of your
Community Council. I am aware that Mr Devine is planning to meet
with Cathy Jamieson MSP on the matter of footpath obstructions and
it may be beneficial if the meeting with your group takes place
after that meeting.”
