A TOWN is boldly going where none has
gone before. And its mission is not only to explore – but to run its
own leisure space. People in Maybole are on an enterprise that could
see them take control of all their leisure facilities. That includes
swimming pool, golf course, football and rugby pitches, bowling
green, and even the town hall. If Maybole Pathfinder works, look out
for it in happening in Prestwick, Troon, Girvan and Ayr. “We
certainly have people with the intelligence and energy to make this
work,” said David Kiltie, chairman of Maybole Community Council.

Gordon Cockburn’s Auschwitz Revisited
collection was on show at the Eastwood theatre/gallery East
Renfrewshire since mid January until 13th February. This collection
of works is a selection from his larger Auschwitz collection. The
Eastwood gallery was specifically approached given that it was in
this area the esteemed Mr Ernest Levy OBE resided. Mr Levy sadly
died on 23rd August 2009 and the exhibition was in commemoration of
his and his wife Cathy's lives. He worked tirelessly to educate the
public, particularly the young, with regard to the horrors of the
holocaust, the issues surrounding this travesty and the relevance in
today's society. more |

The S3 & S4 Personal
development groups from Carrick Academy were hard at
work recently, spending a morning in the Home
economics department, cooking up a storm. The S4
group put on a splendid afternoon tea for parents,
friends and teachers plus a prize quiz. The S3 group
laid on a fantastic feast for the Tuesday club at
the community wing, and provided bingo and prizes
for the group. Both groups had a enjoyable day,
using their culinary talents and excellent attitude.
Well done to all those involved. The group are
working on Personal Development
accreditation as well as their Youth Achievement
Award. |

A TOWN
is boldly going where none has gone before. And
its mission is not only to explore – but to run
its own leisure space. People in Maybole are on
an enterprise that could see them take control
of all their leisure facilities. That includes
swimming pool, golf course, football and rugby
pitches, bowling green, and even the town hall.
If Maybole Pathfinder works, look out for
it in happening in Prestwick, Troon, Girvan and
Ayr. “We certainly have people with the
intelligence and energy to make this work,” said
David Kiltie, chairman of Maybole Community
Council. “Visionary stuff could come out of it.
Already, the golf club wants to
extend the course and set up a golf academy,”
said Mr Kiltie. “Ideas are also emerging that
could see the town hall better used – hosting
more shows, functions and weddings,” he added. A
consultation shows most people in Maybole people
believe local people could manage facilities
better than the council. But the biggest worry
for everyone is the long-term financial
viability of these facilities. “Pathfinder
doesn’t mean South Ayrshire Council is going to
walk away from financial responsibility,” said
David Kiltie. “But we’re trying to work out a
new partnership that will channel the
community’s energy into the facilities it holds
dear.” South Ayrshire last week approved a
contribution of £32,775 for the second phase of
Pathfinder.
That goes with £100,000 pledged
through the European Community Leader fund. Now
Pathfinder can get down to the nitty-gritty of a
business plan, after a first phase of talks and
consultations. More than 30 clubs and groups in
the town are involved as stakeholders. And South
Ayrshire Council remains crucially involved –
even though it must agree to transfer assets.
Council leader Councillor Bill McIntosh told Mr
Kiltie: “We congratulate you on the work done so
far. “I know it’s a daunting task, but it’s an
exciting project in the involvement of
communities.” Deputy leader, Councillor Margaret
Toner said: “Prestwick is very interested in the
way you are going forward.” Mr Kiltie replied:
“I know others are looking at it, and we’ll be
happy to speak to anyone about Pathfinder.”
WORK STARTS ON THE BUILDING OF THE CARRICK CENTRE IN MAYBOLE. January 2011 saw very significant and exciting progress in the building of the new Carrick Centre, with the installation of the foundations for the new building. Members of the local community passing the site would have witnessed the speed at which this process was completed, thanks to the use of the modern process of Vibropiling. To arrive at this point is immensely gratifying to all those people who have committed so much time and effort to establishing the Centre and, if all goes to plan, the community can now look forward to having access to modern and attractive community facilities which will incorporate a modern Church and a separate dedicated youth facility, towards the end of 2011. The Carrick Centre is being funded and built by Maybole Parish Church. In partnership with local voluntary community groups, the Church has formed the Carrick Centre Company to manage the new facility on behalf of the community.
The Centre will be central to the town, close to the bus and rail interchanges, and the large car park attached the Centre will be accessible to both visitors and members of the community, providing much needed additional parking for the town. A community survey was carried out to secure the views of both the public and community voluntary organisations and, as a result of the consultation, the new building is designed to be a multi-purpose venue equipped with the latest audiovisual equipment and sound systems. Within the survey, local young people were consulted on what activities they would like to see in the new Youth Facility and their feedback has served to shape the plans for the Youth Facility. The building of such a Centre is a once in a lifetime event.
In order to capture a picture of life in Maybole in 2011 for future generations, a "time capsule" containing a wide range of items from the present day will be buried in the foundations of the new Church, for opening at some time in the future. Members of the community are being asked for their views on the items that should be placed in the time capsule and suggestions can be posted on the Carrick Centre web site at www.carrickcentre.co.uk. This is a very exciting development in the town and comes at the same time as the recent announcement of plans for further investment of more than £5 million by SAS International, based in Maybole, and the work that is being carried out by Maybole Community Council, in partnership with local shops and businesses, to smarten up the High Street. As spring approaches, the people of Maybole can look forward not only to the new growth that nature brings but also to the new developments that will do much to promote growth in their town.
Carrick Sports Club held its annual Burns Supper last Friday evening. Chairman was Alistair Hastings welcomed everyone, invited club convener to say the Selkirk Grace and then the haggis was piped in by Bryce McCulloch and addressed by Ian Hewitt, former club steward. After the meal, The Fiddlers fae Ayr played a selection of tunes and then the Immortal Memory was eruditely proposed by James Brown. The Toast to the Lassies was very humorously proposed by Dr Brian Scobie in his own inimitable style. Gordon Hennessey recited Holy Willie’s Prayer and Tam o’ Shanter to rapturous applause and musical entertainment was provided by the Fiddlers as well as Bryce McCulloch. Club secretary Bill McCubbin proposed a very comprehensive vote of thanks prior to the company singing The Star o’ Rabbie Burns and Auld Lang Syne.
Gordon Cockburn’s Auschwitz Revisited collection was on show at the Eastwood theatre/gallery East Renfrewshire since mid January until 13th February. This collection of works is a selection from his larger Auschwitz collection. The Eastwood gallery was specifically approached given that it was in this area the esteemed Mr Ernest Levy OBE resided. He worked tirelessly to educate the public, particularly the young, with regard to the horrors of the holocaust, the issues surrounding this travesty and the relevance in today's society.
Mr Levy opened Gordon's first exhibition at Rozelle House gallery and a deep friendship ensued. The present exhibition, which is not for sale, is Gordon's contribution in continuing the work of Mr Levy and others. A private viewing was held on the 6th February 2011 and it was well attended and greatly received by all. Alongside family and friends, the event was attended by prominent members of the Jewish community, Mr Levy's daughter Judy Russell who now continues her father's work via the Holocaust Educational Trust, and Mr Ashley Medicks who is extremely supportive of this collection and has been working with Gordon with a view for future venues at home and abroad and liaising with the media.
The renowned film/documentary maker Mr Matt Pinder was present as well, he is presently in discussion with Gordon and others aiming to make a documentary about the "story" behind the collection. It is hoped that this collection will tour this year in a variety of Scottish venues with the possibility of it travelling abroad. It is Gordon's wish that a permanent "home" can be found for all or part of the collection, approaches have been made with this in mind and tentative discussions are taking place. The event was sponsored by Collinton Homes for which the artist was grateful.

Carrick RFC Match
Report Carrick 20 Jordanhill Phoenix 16
After almost 3 months
without a match due to the weather Carrick welcomed
Jordanhill Phoenix to Maybole. Carrick dominated the
early exchanges which led to a penalty being given
in the Phoenix 22 for entering the ruck from the
side which was kicked through the posts by Euan
McGregor to give Carrick an early lead. This was
followed by the first of two Nick Rossi tries where
Rossi broke through the Phoenix centre line to
finish under the posts. McGregor converted. Towards
the end of the first half Phoenix started to
dominate both possession and territory scoring a
penalty and a converted try to make it 10 points a
piece at half time. The second half began as the
first had started with Carrick struggling to gain
possession from a strong set of Phoenix forwards who
had the advantage of match fitness.
Ten minutes into the
half in one of the only periods of Carrick
possession The home side battered the Phoenix line
leading to another Nick Rossi try which was
converted by McGregor. For the rest of the half
Carrick endured relentless pressure on there own
line by the away side who managed to score two
penalties to get within one point of the lead. Five
minutes from the end of the half McGregor scored
another penalty to make the final score 20 - 16. Due
to the 6 Nations There is no fixture next week the
next match is away to McLaren on the 19th February.
