A DISPLAY honouring a man who once led the free world has been removed from Culzean Castle. And many feel the move is incredibly disrespectful to the memory of US President Dwight D Eisenhower. Items of memorabilia have been taken off show in the castle. And people who asked why it was gone were told ‘because it looked tired’. “I’m shocked about this,” a Culzean insider told the Ayrshire Post. ”I don’t think it was the right thing to do. “If the exhibition looked tired, it should have been brightened up.” “People love nostalgia – if it’s well presented.” more

At the pirates and princess party, children had to walk the plank jumping into a ball pool, played loads of games including musical statues, stick the tail on the donkey, pass the parcel, statues and corners. Then they had a party picnic in the grounds of Maybole Town Hall, the venue for the event. Around fifty parents and children visited the Development Office and enjoyed the various activities on offer. Face and Body Painting was provided by Helen Murray and soon there were little zombies, tigers and polar bears at large on the premises. A “Bits and Pieces” Stall and Kids’ Tombola was organised and run by three of the youngsters, Jacqui Gibson, Maybole’s reigning Gala Queen pf Carrick, and Jack and Fraser Lewis from Ayr. Children’s books were available at the book stall at knockdown prices, and many of the children participated in a colouring-in competition.

The Centre is very grateful to Helen, Jacqui, Jack and Fraser for all their hard work on the day. Thanks are also due to Mhairi Gibson, and Deirdre and Archie Cuthbertson for their assistance in organising and running the event. A big thank you also to Heather Muir, who regularly donates home baking, handicrafts and knitted baby wear for the Centre’s sale table. Considerable interest was shown by parents in the drawings and photographs of the new Carrick Centre, and its planned activities, with Carrick Centre staff on hand for discussion and to answer questions.

Throughout the morning soft drinks, snacks and balloons were available for the children, and the Kids’ Corner morning was judged a success. The new building at the Greenside is rapidly taking shape, with the tiled roof now completed. Completion of the Carrick Centre and Maybole Parish Church is on target for the end of the year as planned. The Carrick Centre’s next Coffee Morning Open Day will be on Friday 26th August from 10 to 12 Noon, once again this will take place in the Development Office in School Vennel and all are cordially invited to see what the Centre is all about.

It reads

“Dear Agnes, meet me at 7 o’clock tonight up the road

From yours ever R McB

I will not be out if it’s wet

No more till I see you”

King George was a grandson of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and his father had become King Edward VII on the death of Victoria in 1901. In 1917, George became the first monarch of the House of Windsor, which he renamed from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. When he died, George was succeeded by his eldest son, Edward VIII who had visited Maybole as Prince of Wales in the 1920s. The photo was also reproduced in “Maybole Past and Present” which was printed to mark the Millennium.

Joe and Netta were married on 10th August 1951, the year that U.S. President Harry S Truman declared an official end to war with Germany.

It was also the year King George VI was the monarch; Winston Churchill replaced Clement Atlee as Prime Minister; future Prime Minister Gordon Brown was born, and the Stone of Destiny turned up at Arbroath Abbey, after being taken from Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, 1950.  Things don’t change all that much, though, as there was a state of emergency declared in Egypt due to increasing riots, and the United Kingdom began an economic boycott of Iran.

He continued, “The award this year goes to someone who was a volunteer fireman for many years, he was an elder and a member of the choir in the Glen Kirk also for many years. “He has been, and still is, a stalwart in the Maybole branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland and was a standard bearer on ceremonial occasions such as Armistice Day. He has also been very active in the charity shop during the years to help to raise much needed funds for the branch. “It is also true to say that he and his good lady have been very loyal members of this Club, being founder members and attending the club with their friends for the past 36 years. “It is said that, many years ago, a not very popular member of Maybole’s nobbery died ‘wi the consent of the hale toon’. “Well, I can say tonight that this trophy is presented to Bill Milligan with the consent of the hale toon!”

He then invited Mr Meek to make the official presentation of the trophy and a commemorative scroll. In thanking the committee, Mr Milligan said he had been really surprised and added, “I never in my life thought something like this would ever happen to me. Thank you to everyone involved.”

The one of Kai with the tuba is him attempting to play it –someone said it sounded more like a ship coming in to harbour! Maybole residents had a rare treat on Sunday afternoon when a brass ensemble from Germany performed at the Greenside. An added bonus was that as soon as they started to play the rain went off! Unfortunately, because the final decision to come over from Germany was a bit short notice, they had not been advertised as playing. However, they had a good time and a busy weekend in Scotland.

They arrived last Friday in Edinburgh where Kai Stutzkeitz, who lives in Maybole, picked them up and brought them to Maybole. On Saturday they headed to the Arran Highland Games; as Kai has attended them for the past ten years he arranged for the band to play there. The Arran Pipe Band provided a drum kit, because they couldn’t get that here by plane. Transporting the tuba was very difficult and funny, because it had a seat to itself and was carried over the head of the passengers through the whole plane. Kai tells us that the Arran Band and Committee were very helpful and happy for the ensemble to play. They had a great day at the Games which attracted almost 3500 spectators who loved the exotic kind of entertainment. During and after the games the boys also had the opportunity to mix with locals and holidaymakers.

On the way back, Martin Heinzmann played a tuba solo in the bar of the ferry and the crowd loved it . Back in Maybole, they visited the Carrick Sports Club where they played for 30 minutes followed by some more socialising. Although they had a long day they were up early on Sunday morning and headed for the Culzean Ayrshire Market where they were again allowed to play. Although the weather was bad they had a dry corner in one of the marquees. The band members were very impressed impressed with the castle and gardens. Then it back to Maybole and their performance at the Greenside for the public. They started with Rock Around the Clock which had some locals wanting to jive and other tunes included Don t worry be happy, Hey Jude, Gospel time, Samba Brazil etc. Their finale was the anthem of Baden, that part of Germany where they are from, called the "Badnerlied".

They are proud of their county and that tune compares with our "Flower of Scotland". They take famous tunes and big band songs and arrange them for the brass ensemble to play. After the concert at the Greenside the boys went for dinner to a local restaurant and a few farewell pints in the Maybole Arms. A little single malt tasting was squeezed in as well with Kai teaching them about the spirit of Scotland. They left for home on Monday morning having had a great weekend and were very impressed with Scotland and its people. Everybody was very helpful and looked after them well. They would like to thank Willie Parker for arranging a drum kit for Culzean and their hosts Marcia, Jean, Ronnie and Kai. The brass ensemble Blechkraft ( Brass-Power) comes from the village of Malsch, close to Heidelberg in the south-west of Germany. It consists of five trombones, one tuba and two drummers.

The intention of the ensemble is to bring modern music played with traditional instruments closer to the people and arouse their interest for this kind of music. Blechkraft was founded in 2008 and has since rehearsed about 75 pieces of music conducted by Alexander Six. They are able to arrange a suitable programme for any occasion – weddings, birthdays, morning performances, opening ceremonies, Christmas concerts and even street performances. Some of the music pieces are considered chamber music and have therefore many solo parts.

The musicians are: Martin Heinzmann: he plays the tuba which is important in a brass ensemble because he plays the basic melodies. Martin performs in different high quality orchestras. Marius Schäfer and Stefan Bös: they are the drummers of the ensemble and have an important job in setting the rhythm for the different pieces. Timo Feldpausch: one of the youngest members of the team playing the trombone. He has already gained a lot of experience playing difficult pieces by Johann de Meij and Maurice Hamers. Alexander Fieres: the other youngster in the ensemble also playing the trombone.

He performs for several orchestras including a symphony orchestra of the conservatorium of Karlsruhe. Manfred Six: plays the trombone and is the “manager” for the ensemble. He puts together the different pieces of music, adjusting them to the needs of the ensemble. He has also had many years of experience in brass music for several orchestras. He made the contact to Kai, because he and his family are good friends. Richard Metzger: trombone player. He took part in different courses for trombone players and received badges in bronze, silver and gold for his outstanding abilities. Alexander Six: he plays the trombone and is also the musical director for the ensemble. He also performs for several highly regarded brass and symphony orchestra of the state and is also the conductor of two other youth orchestras. His biggest achievement with the trombone so far, was to win the bronze medal in the World Championship for Brass Orchestras in Kerkrade, Netherlands in 2009.

Alexander also works as a teacher on the trombone. Each year Blechkraft goes on a concert tour during the summer; last year they took part in a festival for street musicians in Zamardi, Hungary and next year they will be in Calpe, Spain. But for this year they decided to come to Maybole, because their friend and former owner of the restaurant Zehntkeller in Malsch, Kai-Uwe Stutzkeitz put a lot of effort in planning and organising the stay for them. They would like to thank him very much for his help. One more reason to come to Maybole is the good time they had with their friends from Scotland during several visits by Maybole Pipe Band to Germany. A Burns Supper and all the performances of the Pipes and Drums in Malsch gave them a lot of pleasure. These friendly meetings have given them many good memories and the band members hope that they and their music delighted the people of Maybole as well.
