like “Walking the Bottle Walk”, the waiter challenge; Bee Bots go to
France and outdoor games such as Boules. In ICT, pupils made Bonne
Anniversaire cards and everyone enjoyed quizzes and games using lots of
foreign language skills. Our budding Seurat’s (French artist) had fun

produced by each class. Pupils came to school dressed in the costume or
colours of European countries and thanks go to all the parents who
helped with the dressing up. The P7 pupils are to be congratulated too
as they really put in the effort on the day and everyone had a great
time.

Congratulations to Isobel and Billy Johnstone, of Maybole, who celebrated their Golden Wedding recently. The happy couple were married by Rev Stuart Goudie on 22nd September 1961 in the West Parish Church, or Glen Kirk as many knew it. The well-known couple marked the occasion with a party in the Town Hall with family and their many friends. For those interested in history 1961 was quite a year! John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as President of the US, succeeding Dwight Eisenhower who was a Freeman of the Burgh of Maybole; The Beatles performed for the first time at the Cavern Club; the Peace Corps was created in America; the first US Polaris submarines arrived at Holy Loch; black and white £5 notes ceased to be legal tender in the UK; Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space; the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba failed; the American civil rights movement’s Freedom Riders were arrested in Jackson, Mississippi for "disturbing the peace" after disembarking from their bus; President Kennedy announced his goal to put a man on the Moon before the end of the decade; Diana, Princess of Wales was born; the Vietnam War officially began, and "Barbie" got a boyfriend when the "Ken" doll was introduced.

extra mile’ to support others and improve the school, he
also goes about his business with a very pleasant and
helpful manner and uses his initiative to identify tasks
that require to be done rather than waiting to be
instructed.” Scott’s parents, Tracey and Alex, and his
Guidance teacher, Janet McKnight, were present to see
him receive his award.
“The Cairn Fling!” As part of Cairn’s Health and Wellbeing Programme which encourages pupils to lead active and healthy lives, pupils took part in Highland Dancing sessions recently. Everyone learned how to have fun while keeping fit and, at the same time, got a wee taste of traditional Scottish dance. A big thank you to Eilidh McMillan from Aileen Robertson’s Highland Dance School who so enthusiastically got the children jigging to the beat. A big thank you must also go to Event Scotland/South Ayrshire who funded the dance sessions. From P 1 to P 7, the children had a fantastic time.
Pupils in Gardenrose Primary 5, as part of their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory topic, organised this year’s Roald Dahl Day on Tuesday September 13. This is celebrated every year on Roald Dahl’s birthday. P5 decided that every child from P1-P7 should dress up as a character from one of Roald Dahl’s books. Each class voted for a winner and they were awarded a Best Dressed certificate. Classes also took part in activities based on the different books. These included making masks, writing letters to characters, making puppets, reading some of the stories and watching some of the films. It was a fun day and all pupils enjoyed guessing who everyone was dressed up as, including some of the teachers!
Carrick visited Birkmyre for the first game of the league season on Saturday. The first half was a scrappy affair with both sides struggling to turn possession and territory into points. Carrick missed an early penalty attempt at the posts with Birkmyre scoring two in return to finish the first half at 6-0. The second half started well for Carrick with Connor Wyllie turning defence into attack with an interception deep inside the Carrick half and outpacing the Birkmyre defence to run in a superb try. Carrick continued to dominate from this point with Aiden McCartney threatening to score down the left wing and eventually going over the line to score a try on his debut for the senior side which Euan McGregor converted. Another try was added late on by Grant Alexander to make the final score 27-6 to Carrick who now sit 5th in the West 3 league table after the first round of matches. Squad:- Stuart Birnie; Connor Wyllie, Ewan Alexander; Ross Knight; Jonny Evans; Euan McGregor; Grant Ward; William Wyllie; Grant Alexander; Robert Sykes; Michael Paton; Michael Eaglesham; Ewan McKay; Chris Reid; Scott Alexander. Subs: Aiden McCartney; Euan Parker; Simon McGregor. This coming week Carrick play at home to Mull with the kick off at 3pm..
