July 2011

Thirty years ago, in June 1981, four people from Maybole made the first exploratory trip to the French town of Crosne, near Paris, to discuss the possibility of the two towns twinning. David Kiltie, Alan Murray, Don Raby and Pipe Major Jim Sym were so impressed that they recommended that the twinning should go ahead and in 1982 official documents were signed. Recently, Crosne welcomed 24 visitors to their annual carnival and once again everyone had a great time on what was the 30th anniversary of that first trip. more

Maybole lost one of its most popular characters when William Paterson died recently. Some called him Billy but he was most commonly known as “Willie P” and most folk who knew him had their own favourite story to tell. Last week, Masonhill Crematorium was full to hear Rev Tom Bogle’s affectionate eulogy as he told of Willie’s life and achievements. Willie P was born on January 6, 1931 in a house in Drummellan Street. He lost an eye during his National Service in the Navy and on his return home finished his time as a monumental mason. Frightened of doing a poor job due to his eyesight, however, he moved to work at Wallacetown Engineering. more

Alan commented, “We gained a lot of good information about what people would like to see in the Carrick Centre and we hope over the next few months that we can begin to turn these ideas into action. “The main areas of interest which people expressed in the survey included a coffee shop, concerts, soft play and children’s parties although there were lots of other ideas given in the survey.

“Young people expressed a great interest in computer and internet access, free wi-fi, discos and youth clubs. There was also great support for music concerts, games and activities, and somewhere to do homework. “The Carrick Centre has been working with consultants to look at the options available for operating the centre and the information gained in this survey has been of great benefit in preparing an Options Appraisal which will be used to develop the final Business Plan over the next couple of months.

“The organisers are very grateful for all contributions and still welcome other ideas and expressions of interest in the development of the Carrick Centre. Anyone is welcome to call in at the Development Office in School Vennel which normally opens between 10 am and 2 pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. “Our website is www.carrickcentre.co.uk. and you can get up to date information on the progress of the building here as well as linking to our online shopping website and linking to other relevant local websites, we also hope soon to develop a feedback section where you can make comments or give us your views on the development of the Carrick Centre Programme.”

In Madrid, the pilgrims will take part in workshops led by English-speaking Bishops, and animated by other young people, to help them deepen their knowledge and understanding of  faith.

They will get to meet and know young people of faith from all over the world. There will be great gatherings for prayer, a festival of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Stations of the Cross, music concerts, all culminating in the Saturday evening Prayer Vigil with the Holy Father at Cuatro Vientos airfield. After an overnight camping stay, the Holy Father will return on Sunday morning for the celebration of the Eucharist.

At the Cathedral on Sunday, the young pilgrims carried the Scottish Youth Cross, blessed by Cardinal O'Brien last September, in the presence of the First Minister of Scotland. The Cross is a focal point for young people to celebrate their Christian faith. Later the pilgrims and their families and friends came forward and made an act of commitment to the Cross by touching or kissing the wood.

In an address to Bishop Cunningham, Owen McDowall and Caoimhe Hunter Blair, of Our Lady & St Cuthbert's, Maybole, spoke with conviction of their faith journey and their hopes for World Youth Day.  The Bishop thanked them and all the young people, not only for their efforts to take part in World Youth Day, but also for their willing service in the parishes which they belong to. The young pilgrims were blessed by Bishop Cunningham and each of them was presented with a Blessed John Paul II cross.

After the service, together with their families, friends a some of the priests, they enjoyed a buffet in the Cathedral hall where they were given the latest information to help them prepare for this potentially life-changing pilgrimage. You can follow the pilgrimage on the World Youth Day 2011 blog for Galloway Diocese, and see live coverage of the Madrid events at www.madrid11.com.
