MAYBOLE WALKING DAY Sunday, 22nd
August 2010. The first Maybole Walking Day saw 30 people being
introduced to Maybole links on the developing Carrick Way. In ideal
walking weather the groups clocked up a combined 200 miles of rural
strolling. Local walkers were well represented and others from as
far away as Newton Stewart and Glasgow enjoyed routes which link
Maybole with Dunure, Kirkoswald and on to Dailly. With many
experiencing the trails for the first time, the views across the
Firth of Clyde from the Dunure walk and from Knockbrake on the
Kirkoswald walk were amongst the highlights of the day. One of the
walkers said “You don’t need to be up a mountain to get a memorable
panorama!” more |

I’ll miss him.” With that one sentence
Rev Tom Bogle summed up the thoughts of the many people who packed
Maybole Baptist Church last week for the funeral of Big Bill Kenny,
a former Maybole Citizen of the Year.. In a eulogy filled with
humour Mr Bogle captured the very essence of Bill, recounting many
anecdotes from Bill’s life. He said, “Billy, like a lot of others
including my mum, didn’t take up his place in the Academy. If he
had, goodness knows what he’d have become – a surgeon, a lawyer, an
MP or what?“ He did become a fundraiser for charities, the
definitive Santa Claus for generations of children, a devoted
husband to Margaret, a fraught father who cared deeply, a doting
grandpa and great grandpa. “He was a quoter of Burns, a faithful
brother – and barman – to Lodge No. 11 and a man who had no time for
fools.

Steady but slow progress on Maybole
High Street facelift The Working Group set up by Maybole Community
Council to look at refreshing the High Street has had a good
response from the shops which were approached to take part in the
project. The next stage is to find a firm of painters and decorators
who would be interested in pricing and carrying out the work and
working group members are keen to hear from any such firms. One
disappointing aspects of the initiative so far is the lack of
interest from owners of empty shops. A spokesman for the group said,
“The empty shops are often those which look the worst and make the
town look shabby. more |

annual event in Maybole and the organisers from the Carrick Way
group are looking at future dates.
The next Walking
Day is likely to be in late Spring next year. Watch out for the
publicity nearer the time. Meanwhile if you want to know more about
the Carrick Way or ideas for walking in the area contact Drew Moyes
at 01290 550276 or realise@globalnet.co.uk.
After walking about 180
miles for charity, Maybole postman Alex Gemmell
is now finalising the collection of his sponsorship
money. Alex reckons he has raised over £2,000 for
research into neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that
mostly affects children. The money will be going to
Joining Against Cancer in Kids (JACK), a charity
which provides advice and support for children and
families who would like to undertake innovative or
experimental treatments for neuroblastoma.
They also fund
research designed to discover the causes of and cure
for neuroblastoma. Alex got to hear about the
problem through a colleague in the Territorial Army,
Chris Riddle whose daughter Vanessa has this type of
cancer. To raise the funds Alex walked from
Inverness to Milngavie along the Great Glen Way and
the West Highland Way.
The Great Glen Way
runs from the city of Inverness along the Great Glen
Fault to Fort William at the northern end of the
West Highland Way. The route follows closely the
line of the Caledonian Canal. The West Highland Way
links Fort William in the Highlands to Milngavie,
just outside Glasgow.
Alex is delighted with
how much he has been sponsored but if anyone would
like to add to the total just give him a shout if
you see him on his post route round Maybole. Or you
can get in touch with him at 55 Hicks Av, Maybole
(Tel 01655 883496). When all the money has been
collected, Alex will be inviting Vanessa and her
parents to Maybole to pick up a cheque.

refurbished and redecorated with input from local
funeral arrangers Irene Hewitt and Elma Mackie. Alan
Campbell, Manager,said: “The refurbished branch
looks wonderful and I’m sure that it will help to
enhance the professional and caring approach that
Co-operative Funeralcare takes towards its work with
bereaved families.” Others who attended included
Principal Funeral Director Alex Dunlop, Robert

“We we will continue to
try to contact these absentee landlords to see if we can
get them involved in this project. “The first phase,
which involves trying to do something about all the
premises which are at street level, will only be
successful if we can tackle the worst premises.
“Decorative vinyls can be applied commemorating the Year
of Homecoming to take the empty look away from these
shops and provide a colourful display in their windows.
“We would urge all owners of such premises to contact us
as soon as possible, we would also ask anyone who has
any up to date information regarding ownership to pass
their details to the working group so that we can
contact them” Anyone who wishes to assist in this
initiative either by being involved in pricing and
carrying out the work or helping to trace owners can

It was another fun-filled summer for members of
Maybole Youth Club. There was lots to do with
the young people taking part in sports, games,
cooking, a doughnut-eating, a cracker eating
competition and a poster competition. The programme
also included outdoor activities such as canoeing,
Xscape, Loudoun Castle and loads more. The new
session of the Youth Club starts on Monday August 30
for S1 and S2 6.30 – 9pm and Tuesday September 1
from 6.30 – 8.30pm at Carrick Academy’s community
wing. Everyone is welcome and if any adult would
like to volunteer please contact Yvonne kiltie on
01655 882105.
A
group of young people, aged 6 – 12, had a great time
last week creating self portraits during a workshop
run by Maybole and District Young Arts.
Other sessions have included outings to Jupiter
Artland near Edinburgh, a day at the Ayr Races with
renowned sports artist Jim Scullion and Vaughan
Jones of the British Horse Racing and Educational
Standards Trust, a graffiti day, and an outing to
Maybole shore to make sand sculptures. The group is
enjoying its first full season as a Young Arts
group, part of the NADFAS scheme, and is supported
by Ayr Decorative and Fine Arts Society, a Community
Chest grant from the Scottish Government, and by
South Ayrshire Council. Last year's pilot had a
near 100% approval rating from the children taking
part, and the group looks set to go from strength to
strength. The young people are encouraged to
develop confidence and individuality through
creative work.
