The Peas 25th anniversary night was a fantastic success in Maybole Town Hall. The present line up of Davie Anderson, Jimmy Murdoch and Gavin Loch were joined during the evening by former band members such as Michael Andrew, Robbie Kidd and Alan Johnstone to bring their own style to old time rock and roll which had their audience bopping away. Maybole Pipe Band made a guest appearance and DJDK played during the band breaks. He brought the night to a close by playing Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best” as a tribute to the band. Proceeds from the dance mean that £1,000 will be going to charity.  photos

They were followed by members of the Maybole Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, the royal party, VIPs and several very colourful walking groups from schools and organisations in the town.

At the Glebe Park, David Kiltie introduced the dignitaries and the gala was officially opened by Councillor Marie Low then Robert McEwan crowned King of Carrick by Cathy Jamieson MSP and Alix Anderson was crowned Queen by Adam Ingram MSP. The young king and queen are both pupils of Cairn Primary, and their attendants were Chris Parkin and Rebecca McBride of Gardenrose Primary, and Zak Roy and Ciera Campbell of St Cuthbert’s Primary.

Sandra Osborne MP presented gifts to all of them to mark their special day. Also attending the event were Councillors Ann Galbraith and Sandra Goldie and all of the VIPs had a difficult choice in judging the best walking group and the various fancy dress competitions.

Magic Malky then took over as master of ceremonies and soon had the young people joining in the fun with the older folks sitting enjoying the sun and smiling along with Malky’s individual humour.

Musical entertainment was provided by Maybole Pipe Band, the Tuesday Night Girls and dancing by pupils of the Chi-Kaz School of Dance, Maybole Majorettes and Dance School, the Aileen Robertson School of Highland Dancing, and the Y Group.

With more stalls than in some previous years, the organising committee of Maybole Community Association were extremely pleased with how the day had gone. With almost a brand new committee having to be formed they felt that all their hard work was worthwhile. They would like to thank everyone who took part in making sure the gala ran so well. photos and events

Group Working to Improve the High Street

A working group established by Maybole Community Council hopes to contact owners and tenants of shops in the High Street to ask them if they would like to take part in a project to refurbish and paint shop facades.  Contact will be made explaining the project and where shopkeepers or owners express an interest, an experienced firm of decorators will prepare estimates for the required work.

Funding applications will then be submitted to relevant bodies and planning consent applied for.  This work will then be carried out by local firms experienced in this kind of work. A spokesman for the Community Council said, “It is felt that many premises in Maybole High Street would benefit from a facelift and the Community Council hopes that by working together, effective action can be taken to improve the look of the High Street.

“Maybole High Street, of course suffers in many ways from the heavy traffic and one of the effects is wear and tear on shop front premises.  We hope that this initiative will improve the situation. “We are also working with South Ayrshire Council to look at some vacant premises to see if their owners can be traced and persuaded” to take action to improve the condition of these premises.

When this is done, some empty premises will be identified where decorative vinyls can be applied commemorating the Year of Homecoming to take the empty look away from those premises and provide a colourful display in their windows.  The Community Council has been working with an organisation which successfully did this in empty premises in Glasgow City Centre.”

Although letters will go out in the next few weeks, any owners or tenants of shop premises in the High Street who wish to be involved in this initiative can email the Community Council at alan.murray49@btinternet.com and a representative of the working group will arrange to meet and discuss participation in this project.

She left Carrick in 1979 to start working in Derbyshire and is now retired from the force and enjoying life doing all the things she never had time to do because of shift work and other work commitments.

The citation read out when Linda received her award said, “Linda joined Derbyshire Constabulary as a Police Cadet in 1979 and for the whole of her service as a Police Constable has been deployed in the frontline of policing in Derby City. “Personal testimonies from members of the public and colleagues reflect the same constant message - dedicated, sincere, reliable, conscientious, diligent and positive. “Linda's brilliant and distinguished career was brought to a premature end through injury in the course of her duties - such a cruel blow for Linda just short of completing 30 years.

“Linda was always a 24 hours a day, seven days a week police officer at the sharp end of policing - arresting villains and putting them behind bars. She had an outstanding arrest record, a tremendous work ethic and put a lot of hours into her role, never quibbling about working shifts, weekends or covering for other colleagues. “Linda's off duty arrest of a burglar is just one example of the high standards she set for herself. And her heroics in rescuing a man standing perilously on a bridge in danger of falling into the river beneath them earned recognition with an award from the Royal Humane Society.

“Linda has been an inspiration to junior officers and is valued for tutoring many officers who put their success down to Linda's guidance in their early years. “Linda's police work has been a genuine vocation for her and she always carried out the job with the greatest of pride. She is the epitome of what the public want and expect from a police officer. Her passion and commitment to frontline policing is legendary.”
