Friday 25th June was a very
special night for the parish of Our Lady & St Cuthbert in
Maybole as parishioners gathered to thank Fr Stephen
McGrattan for his time with them from November 2004 to April
2010. After Mass, concelebrated with Fr Philip Kitchen, Fr
Stephen recounted some memories of his time in Maybole.
There were several gifts given to him by John Sabbatini on
behalf of daily Mass attenders, Rhiain Collins from the
youth of the parish, and David Kiltie, chair of the Parish
Pastoral Council, on behalf of the whole parish. Afterwards,
in the hall, there was a sumptuous spread, and film shows of
Fr Stephen’s life from birth till leaving Our Lady & St
Cuthbert’s. Fr Philip added, “Many thanks to all who helped
to make Fr Stephen’s presentation such a wonderful parish
event. The atmosphere was wonderful - especially round the
buffet!” |

Following the death of Maybole’s
Willie Boyce last year, local firefighters decided that they would
like to do something in his honour. As their 2010 charity dance was
being organised at the time, it was suggested that all the proceeds
could go to a charity of the Boyce family's choice. Kevin McDermott
contacted Mrs Boyce to let her and her family know that they were
thinking of them and keen to do something in honour of Willie. The
Boyce family were touched by this offer and decided that the charity
that they would like to see benefit from the fundraising was Brain
Tumour UK. Kevin told us, “The dance was a huge success raising a
staggering £2500 which is fantastic.”

Maybole Golf Club invited local
councilors and members of South Ayrshire council to go along and
observe Club Golf in action. With over 80 kids registered within the
programme and more joining every week, Maybole has now become the
biggest centre for club golf in South Ayrshire. As part of the
on-going partnership with South Ayrshire council, Thursday nights
and Sunday afternoons have been handed over to the young golfers.
This allows them to develop their skill on a golf course with
professional coaching available during these times. Maybole Golf
Club boasts seven level one coaches and recently obtained the
services of PGA professional Gareth Hardy, who is coaching the older
ones in course management, golf etiquette and shot making. If you
want your child to learn how to play golf then go along and enrol
them on Thursday nights at Maybole Golf Club around 6pm..Golf
equipment will be supplied if necessary. |

I have recently started
my new post of Ancient tree hunt assistant where I have
to attempt to make the public aware and to get them
involved in finding and recording ancient or notable
trees throughout Ayrshire. We hope that the public will
be able to find and record 1000 Ayrshire trees. These
trees have to be either interesting, old or have a large
girth which denotes age in most cases. I am based with
East Ayrshire Woodlands in Cumnock The tree hunt
recording system is active on the woodland trust web
site
http://www.ancient-tree-hunt.org.uk/ where full
information on recording can be found.
