Maybole
Castle Community Trust held its first AGM last week
in the castle. In his chairman’s report, Peter Mason
told those attending” Maybole is unique in having this
castle situated on its main street.
“So when the trustees of Cassillis
Estate offered it for community use on a very long term
lease at a nominal amount this committee was formed. The
remit for the Trust was basically to examine the
practicalities of this offer and to consider possible
future use of the building as a community asset to
Maybole and the surrounding area.
“Of primary importance was the need
to render the castle wind and watertight in order to
preserve it for future generations and also at the same
time carry out such alterations as would meet the needs
of any possible future changes of use within the
building. The field, gardens and other outbuildings also
came into the equation for possible future use.
“Owing to the extensive nature of
possible repairs and alterations to the castle and
grounds, it was decided, in the first instance, to seek
funding in order to employ professional consultants to
carry out a comprehensive options appraisal on our
behalf.
“This was especially necessary due to
the historical nature of the building and its Listed
Building status. In December 2009 a grant of £4,500 was
received from South Ayrshire Council and further grants
from Ayrshire Leader, the Architectural Heritage Fund
and the Royal Institute of Architects enabled the
project to go ahead.
“Strathclyde Building Preservation
Trust was appointed as consultants along with
consultants on engineering, architecture, quantity
surveying, business advising and valuation to carry out
the work towards producing an options appraisal. Our
Trust was represented at these appointments along with
the main consultant (SBPT). and it was indicated that
the time scale for the completion of the Options
Appraisal would be six months.
“A public consultation exercise was
carried out in December 2009 and January 2010 and
involved the use of the press, a public questionnaire on
the web and in various premises and culminating in a
public meeting in the Town Hall on January 12, 2010.
This meeting was well attended by local organisations
and local people. It was later reported that 80% of the
responses were in favour of community ownership of the
castle and grounds, and that a heritage type of activity
was top of the preferred usage. The results of this
exercise were passed on to the consultants for
consideration in the appraisal report.
In May 2010 the Final Options
Appraisal was produced by the consultants. This was a
substantial document of some 114 pages and contained a
very comprehensive report on the present condition of
the building and possible schemes for renovation,
alteration and sources of revenue.
“This should be regarded as the
culmination of stage 1 in this process with all costs
paid. In view of the probable costs for any of the
schemes envisaged for the future of the castle much
thought will have to be given to whether we can oversee
such a huge undertaking and will we be able to obtain
funding for such a venture.”
A
cheque for a massive £2,420 was handed over to 10
year old Vanessa Riddle in Maybole last Saturday by
local postman Alex Gemmell. Earlier this year, Alex
walked about 180 miles for charity to raise funds for
research into neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that mostly
affects children. The money will be going to Joining
Against Cancer in Kids (JACK), a charity which provides
advice and support for children and families who would
like to undertake innovative or experimental treatments
for neuroblastoma. They also fund research designed to
discover the causes of and cure for neuroblastoma.
Vanessa has this type of cancer and Alex got to hear
about the problem through her dad Chris who is a
colleague in the Territorial Army. Chris is a Squadron
Sergeant Major in the Ayrshire Yeomanry.
To raise the funds Alex
walked from Inverness to Milngavie along the Great Glen
Way and the West Highland Way and on Saturday Chris paid
tribute to Alex for his efforts and thanked him for all
he had done. Vanessa would also like to thank everyone
who sponsored Alex. In addition, hundreds of sponsors
signed for Gift Aid to let the charity claim back tax on
the donation which could add up to another £600 to the
total. Echoing Vanessa, Alex would like to thank all his
sponsors with special mention of those from the
Northumberland Hussars, Ayrshire Yeomanry, 163 Transport
and Movements Regiment (Grantham), Old Comrades
Association and Spirit Aerostructures Monkton.
Last year, Maybole man Sammy Dalziel made a
special donation to Rainbow Services Day Care Centre
after his wife Mary died. He had sent a donation of
£250 and he and his daughter Christine Dolan were
invited to the Centre to be thanked by owners Sandy
and Alice Abbot. Sammy told them, “Mary enjoyed
going to Day Care; Mondays and Wednesdays were her
brightest days as she patiently waited on getting
picked up. Thanks for taking such good care of her.”
Sadly, Sammy himself died recently and Christine has
donated the £580 collection taken at his funeral to
the same cause. Last week she and her son Lewis took
along a cheque to a coffee morning being run to
raise funds for the Centre and Christine echoed her
father in hoping that the donation will be of good
use to what he had called, “such a wonderful place”.
Mr Abbot thanked Christine for her donation and
explained that the Centre had a special account for
the Day Care Centre which will be used solely for
activities and outings for those who attended. He
also thanked Minnie Gallacher, Margaret Kirkwood,
Helen Dunn, Nancy Gibson and everyone else who
donated baking etc. Presentation was on Saturday
30th October so there were a few helpers in fancy
dress. Christine Dolan, holding son Lewis, is 4th

From Alison Purdie,
Chair of Cairn Parent Council. Having looked at
the consultation document that is to be presented to
the Leadership panel we are more determined than
ever to oppose this idea. The option they favour is
the worst one possible from our point of view -
closing Cairn, merging the schools and sending the
P7s to Carrick.
If this were truly for the
educational benefit of the P7s then South Ayrshire
Council would be rolling the idea out for all P7s, not
just those in Maybole. It is interesting that this
option also provides the Council with the largest
saving, according to their figures. The disadvantages of
this for the P7s are not addressed, ie the loss of the
'prefect' year when they take more responsibility within
the primary school and the 'limbo' state in which they
will find themselves; not part of the secondary school
and detached from the primary school, cannot improve
their experience. The closure of Cairn Primary School
also poses safety questions for the children having to
cross the A77 to travel to and from school. Any resident
of Maybole knows how busy and dangerous this road is,
asking primary school children to cross this busy road
is sheer madness.
In the document, the
Council state that in 2008 the Council invested £300k to
rewire the main building and replace the windows. The
classrooms were not upgraded but freshened up as part of
the rewire and restoration work was carried out on the
floor of the internal hall. This makes no mention of the
new carpets laid in the nursery and the lowering of all
the ceilings in the school to increase energy
efficiency. The document also states that an investment
of £1.85m would be required to allow Cairn PS to
continue, this includes £1.3m to replace the dining
hall. The gym hall at Cairn used to double as the dining
hall and could do so again at a fraction of the£1.3m the
Council suggest is required.
This option should be
investigated by the Council before closing a lively,
successful and valued school. The council state that the
dining/PE hall is nearing the end of its life. If this
is so, and we have not been shown a surveyor's report to
substantiate this, then as this building was built
around the same time as the Gardenrose building does
this not suggest that the building at Gardenrose is also
nearing the end of its life. Perhaps the Council would
be better investing their money in building the new 3-18
Campus at Carrick Academy rather than spending it on
short term money-saving options. The Document seems to
suggest that Cairn Primary should be closed to fund the
improvement of the Gardenrose building!
Mums from Both Cairn
and Gardenrose Primaries met together last week
to discuss the proposal to close Cairn which will
have a serious impact on Gardenrose as well. Their
meeting was also attended by David Kiltie, chairman
of Maybole Community Council. The parents are keen
that the proposal is seen to be a town-wide issue
and is not restricted to primary school parents and
children. A spokesman for the joint committee said
afterwards, “We have agreed that we should do as
much work prior to the consultation to show our
passion against this proposal. There are two main
actions that we feel can be carried out before 23rd
November when the proposal will be discussed by
councillors.
Firstly, we would like
all parents, carers, local residents etc to write a
personal heartfelt letter to our elected leaders
stating why we are against this proposal as
individuals. It can be anything from a few lines to
a page long. We want to show why our schools means
so much to us and our children. These letters should
be handed back into Gardenrose and Cairn and they
will be compiled and presented to the council.
We have been advised
that letters will receive more attention than a
petition and that is why we are appealing for
everyone to do this. Secondly, we would appreciate
everyone’s support outside the County Buildings in
Ayr on Tuesday 23rd November at 10am where we will
stage a silent protest while the councillors are
discussing the consultation inside.”
Local councillors
Brian Connolly, Ann Galbraith, Sandra Goldie and
Mairi Low will also be contacted. The mums are
considering asking for an extension to the minimum
period of consultation of 33 working days as most
people including parents, children and teachers will
be busy with Christmas activities then the holidays
will begin. They feel it is not unreasonable to ask
for the start of the official consultation to be
delayed until January when people can focus more on
this process.
They claim that there
is enough bad feeling as the proposal was first
announced at the start of the October holiday period
when no one was available for the barrage of
questions that parents had. South Ayrshire Council
is encouraging everyone in Maybole to attend a
meeting in the Town Hall on 8th December at 7pm to
discuss the Big Budget Challenge. The mums feel as
this closure is being proposed to save money then
that meeting would be an ideal time to make their
feelings known. They are asking that as many people
as possible attend that meeting.
Carrick Academy pupil Anne McMillan beat off
competition to be awarded a Nuffield Foundation
Science Bursary which allowed her to spend the
summer on a unique work placement with the Scottish
Agricultural College at Auchincruive. In this
International Year of Biodiversity, Anne joined a
group of French students to work with The Land
Economy and Environment Research Group studying
wildlife around field margins and uncultivated land
near burns and ponds which help protect against
pollution.
Research leader, Dr
Lorna Cole said, “I thoroughly enjoyed having Anne
working with me this summer. The Nuffield Foundation
provides a unique opportunity for young budding
scientists to experience what life is like in a real
research environment. “It was great to experience my
research through the eyes of a keen student and to
share my passion for creepy crawlies! “ Anne worked
hard tracking down bumblebees and butterflies on
farmland in order to see which types of field
margins were most beneficial to these important
pollinators and produced an excellent report of her
work.” As a condition of receiving her bursary from
the Nuffield Foundation, Anne had to complete a
report about her work.
This report gained a
much deserved Gold Crest Award for Anne from the
British Science Association. She was the only South
Ayrshire pupil to gain this prestigious award this
year. Anne’s love of Biology and her work experience
helped her to come to the decision to study
veterinary medicine at university so this year she
is studying for Advanced Highers in Biology,
Chemistry and Maths. The school wishes her every
success in her future studies.
