Maybole was
featured again on national television last week when ITV’s This
Morning was beamed live from the capital of Carrick. Maybole One
Stop Shop MOSS had been given £8,000 last month by the programme to
develop a property in School Vennel into a brand new Age Concern
centre.
Staff were given only a few weeks
to complete the project and managed it with just hours to spare.
Project Manager Gillian Anderson worked round the clock with a small
army of volunteers, mainly staff, family and friends to help her,
and told us, "It was hard going and at times I didn't think we were
going to be ready for the programme to go on air.
"We finally managed to get there
with just hours to spare." Presenter Steve Wilson opened the
programme saying that he was surprised he had travelled 500 miles
for a grand opening ceremony but no one seemed to have turned up.
Just then the sound of the pipes, played by 12-year-old Carrick
Academy pupil Scott Barrie, was heard and a crowd of young and old
appeared behind the presenter to wave to the cameras. As well as
tunes fro Scott, the TV audience were treated to some festive music
from members of the Three Schools Choir and the official cutting of
the ribbon was performed by 95-year-old William Fielding and Isa
Fulton, 86.
In addition to a number of locals
present, Provost Winifred Sloan attended as did legendary singer
Sydney Devine. Fr Stephen McGrattan, chair of the MOSS steering
group, introduced everyone to the audience and after the ceremony
they all entered the new centre to see what was on offer for senior
citizens in the town. Weary but well pleased with the end result,
Gillian would like to thank everyone who helped out with getting the
centre open in time and all who donated time and equipment. If
anyone wants to provide any additional equipment or items for use by
the pensioners, all donations will be gratefully received. Just get
in touch with Gillian at 01655 884032.
Class Reunion 2008. They
started Carrick Academy Primary together in 1950 and they have
remained friends ever since. At a school reunion in 1995, when they
were 50 they felt that the years since they left school had just
vanished and they got on as well that night as they had done at
school. Since that reunion 10 of them have continued to meet four
times a year and have visited Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, Liverpool
and Yorkshire to tour the Emmerdale set. They also have an annual
visit to Largs where one of them now lives.
In 2005 to celebrate their 60th birthday seven of the
“girls” visited Toronto, Niagara and New York. The intrepid
travellers been have on their holidays again and seven of them
enjoyed a Mediterranean Cruise recently. With one of the seven who
visited the USA unable to make the cruise another stepped in to keep
the “Magnificent Seven” legend alive.
They flew to Palma in Majorca and then cruised to
Messina in Sicily, Naples and Carrera in mainland Italy, Toulon in
France and Barcelona in Spain before returning to Palma and flying
back to Glasgow. The Geography Department at Carrick Academy
all those years ago should be proud that they are now learning first
hand all about these countries. While they were on the cruise they
celebrated the youngest member’s birthday. This picture was taken on
the evening of Betty Jackson’s birthday.
Back - Maiden names (so everyone will know who we are
talking about!):- Helen Fulton - Myra Anderson -Margaret Milroy -Nan
Kelly Front row - Betty Clark -Betty Jackson -Sheila Menzies -
The Magnificent Seven intend to continue their
meetings four times a year and their trip away each year. They also
have plans for a future foreign trip to help celebrate their 65th
birthday and hope to retain their enthusiasm for travel for many
years to come
Chi-Kaz School of Dance
is run by Charley and Kayleigh Murphy, from Maybole, who
only started up the small dance school in January 2008. As
none of the children had ever danced or been involved in a
dance show before, Charley & Kayleigh are very proud of all
the girls for all the effort they put into the dance show.
Charley commented, “”We though they did extremely well
throughout the night and we would like to say thanks to all
our dancers and family and friends who pulled together and

before Laura went to teach at her sister Karen Douglas
School of Dance in Heathfield, Ayr. Charley & Kayleigh

as three years old can attend and there is no age limit, and

Cairn Primary Eco Committee
and Eco Warriors recently were delighted to receive an Awards
for All grant of £2,320 to make an Eco garden in the Infant
playground. In order to get it all started, they held a design
competition for the whole school and the children had to draw
their design on a grid and label it clearly to show what was in
it. The winner was Liam Kennedy from Primary 7, who was ably
helped by his Aunt Zoe. The design is fabulous, with pergolas
and planters, trees and insect and bug homes, along with some
seating where pupils can sit and enjoy the space. The school
will try to use as many of Liam’s design ideas as possible in
the finished garden! His fellow pupils had this message for him,
“Well done Liam - we are proud of you!”
St Andrew’s Day Celebration – ‘Proud to be
Scots’. St Cuthbert’s Primary school took part in a week long
celebration of St Andrew the Patron Saint of Scotland which
culminated in a whole school assembly to showcase their hard
work. Primary 1 to 3 investigated and produced a collage of the
story of St Andrew, while primary 4 to 7 took part in a
challenge to research some famous Scots from the past and
present. Scott Barrie from Carrick Academy visited the school
and played the pipes to set the scene, P1-3 led the school in
dancing the Gay Gordons ,and P6-7 sang some well known Scottish
songs as well as reciting some Scottish poems. Head teacher Mrs
Miller told us, “To bring the celebrations to an end we had some
homemade shortbread all washed down with some Irn Bru! Thanks to
everyone who made this celebration a success. It was a braw
day!”
It gets better and better in
Maybole. Last Saturday Maybole Community Association held the
town’s annual bazaar, and once again local residents turned out
in force to support their local groups. Peter Mason, chairman,
said, “Santa’s Grotto looked great due to the hard work put in
by Eddie Glass, caretaker, and I would like to thank all members
of the Association for all the hard work they put in. The day
was a great success thanks to their hard work and planning. “I
would also like to thank Councillor Connolly for the use of the
Santa chair which we used to take photos of children sitting on
it. “One of our local MSPs also turned up and spent some money
supporting the groups and I would like to thank Adam Ingram MSP.
Last but not least, I and the committee would like to thank
Santa yet again; we know how busy he is at this time of year but
he always seems to find the time to come to our Christmas
bazaar. Thanks Santa and we will be seeing you very soon.”
How Awards for All has
benefited Carrick Academy Football Section
This year Carrick Academy has made tremendous strides
forward in terms of football development, participation and
cooperation. Both the football and rugby sections have benefited
greatly from our National Lottery Awards for All funding. Robert
Dunsmuir who co-ordinates the school’s football section has been
able to use the additional funding in many different ways which has
not only increased participation numbers within the school but has
helped to foster a strong sense of identity between the pupils
involved with the football section and the school.
As a result of the extra money received the school
have been able to buy much needed new football kit for theU18 boys
team, U16 boys team, U13 boys team and U18 girls team. Photo Wizard
of Ayr took care of the printing and embroidery of the shirts.
Mr Dunsmuir said, “We have also been able to pay for
two senior boys and a member of staff to complete their Football
Refereeing Qualification. David Logan, Kyle Cook and Robert
Dunsmuir recently completed the 12 week evening course run by
Douglas Smith and Francis Andrews of the Ayrshire Referee’s
Association, at Kilmarnock Academy.
“We are now able to use our senior pupils to
officiate home matches, which helps these pupils gain valuable
experience and help the school fulfil competitive fixtures. We have
also been able to buy new footballs and coaching equipment with the
money secured from Awards for All, which has greatly improved the
quality of our coaching sessions.
“In cooperation with the Scottish Football
Association, we have been able to provide an opportunity for some of
our senior pupils and staff to complete their Level One, Youth
Pathways coaching badge. There were 13 pupils and staff who
completed this course.
“Scott Guy, SFA Development Officer, delivered the
course in conjunction with Cash back in the Community. The course
took 6 hours to complete and everyone passed. The staff and pupils
are now using their qualification to the full by getting involved in
coaching with the junior pupils in the school.
“The pupils who have gained their coaching
qualification are Ross Knight, David Logan, Mark Taylor, Kenneth
McDowall, Michael Kirk, Craig McWhirter, Calum Smith, Lewis Cairns
and Lyle Cairns. The staff who gained their qualifications are John
Wilson, Robert Dunsmuir, Kevin Riley and Emmanuel Pesoli. We hope
to work with the SFA again to further enhance our coaches’
qualifications and identify new coaches each year!
“Ayr United’s soccer one initiative in conjunction
with Bank of Scotland have also been a great support in our football
development, they have provided expert coaches who have taken groups
of boys and girls on Tuesday’s after school for free coaching
sessions.
“The school now has seven football teams which
include U18, U16, U15, U14, U13 and U13 2nd XI boys teams as well as
an U18 girls team for the first time in the school’s history. In
previous years the most we had were four football teams. A fifth of
the pupils in our school are actively involved with the school’s
football section.
“All of our teams have played competitive football by
fulfilling Scottish Cup fixtures, League Cup fixtures and Ayrshire
Cup fixtures as well as friendly matches. We have had varying
degrees of success which we hope to build on for years to come!
“We would like to thank the National Lottery Awards
for All scheme for providing us with the financial help that has
enabled us to develop the football section. We would like to thank
our head teacher Mr Stewart and all of the
staff at Carrick Academy in
particular Gordon Brown for their continued support of our football
teams. We would also like to thank our partners mentioned above for
their support and all of the pupils and their parents who
participate, watch and support football within Carrick Academy.”
