The Carrick Centre committee organised a St Andrew’s Concert last Friday night to raise funds for the proposed new centre which will incorporate a new Maybole Parish Church. The money raised will be shared with Action Research Compère for the evening was Alan Murray and entertainment was provided by the Three Schools Choir (Cairn, Gardenrose and St Cuthbert’s) with Kay Feldmann and Deirdre Cuthbertson; dancers Rachel Montgomery and Kirsty Young of the Aileen Robertson School of Dancing; singers Jim Stevens and his daughter Mhairi Gibson, pipers Scott Barrie, Louise Allan and William Limond; Bobby Paul and Hugh Paterson .

When was the first time you sat on a pony? Jane McCulloch persuaded 40 people to ride a pony, many for the first time, in the wind and rain on Sunday 19th October, raising over £1200 for the Carrick Centre. A life long lover of horses and ponies, Jane organised the event in memory of her mother Mrs Anne Nelson, who passed away last December. Mrs Nelson was involved in many community and church activities throughout her life and was a great supporter of Jane’s horse related activities. more

Gordon Cockburn marked his fifth anniversary of buying his gallery in Maybole by holding a pre-Christmas exhibition last weekend. Also on show were some excellent pieces of work by JD Fergusson, Byrne and Howson. Gordon told us he was delighted with the response from the many people who turned up. Photo shows Gordon looking at the JD Fergusson work that was loaned to him for the exhibition. Also on show were contributions from Patrick McCann from Girvan, whom Gordon described as an up and coming talent saying that Patrick was being assisted by Peter Howson. In addition the famous actor John Cairney had provided some pieces from his latest book.

Carrick Academy is South Ayrshire’s School of Ambition with a focus on active learning, active partnerships and active leadership. As part of that programme, all Carrick Cluster primary schools as well as Dalrymple PS from East Ayrshire were invited to send their P7 pupils to a special Leadership Challenge Day at the school. Around 110 pupils came together for the first time in a series of physical team challenges within the PE department with tasks such as Bucket Head, Hockey Dribble and Helium Stick! more

Last year, schools, churches, clubs and thousands of individuals donated over 140,000 filled shoeboxes to the Blythswood Care Shoebox Appeal. These gifts brought much joy to the children and adults who received them. Over the last five years over 500,000 boxes have been distibuted. This year, many local churches have again been doing their bit to help. Holy Trinity, Ayr completed 30 boxes and St Oswald's Church, Maybole, part of the South Ayrshire team, completed 110 - a staggering total of 140 shoeboxes. Evan McLaughlin (3) from Maybole helped carry every single one into the back of the collection van....well almost!

Pudsey would like to say a BIG THANK YOU To all pupils and parents at Cairn Primary School who organised a Children In Need fun competition held on Friday 14th November. A very special thanks to all mums and dads for their contribution in both money and bandanas!! A great day was had by all and the school raised over £118 for the appeal and got a mention on the TV programme. Well done everyone!

Jim Grant and Kathleen McCrorie would like to thank family and friends for donations in aid of "Breast Cancer Care". They recently did a walk on board the HSS Stenna-Line crossing from Stranraer to Belfast raising £265 for the worthy cause.

As part of the St. Cuthbert’s Year of Reading initiative the school celebrated the National Story Telling Day by having “Tell Me A Story” sessions for the children on Friday 31st October. Parents and friends of the school came in to the school to read a favourite short story, picture book or a chapter from a book that was read as a child. Readings ranged from Charlotte’s Web to The Twits to We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. All the children (and the volunteers!) enjoyed the reading sessions and the day was a great success.

4 year olds from Gardenrose Nursery visited residents of Crosne street sheltered housing unit last Thursday November 20. Old and young thoroughly enjoyed themselves making Christmas cards.

Rainbow Services held a coffee morning to raise funds for outings for those who enjoy the opportunity centre in Whitehall. It was a great turn out raising £400 gave people the opportunity to see the facilities.

Only Fools on Horses…When was the first time you sat on a pony? Jane McCulloch persuaded 40 people to ride a pony, many for the first time, in the wind and rain on Sunday 19th October, raising over £1200 for the Carrick Centre.

A life long lover of horses and ponies, Jane organised the event in memory of her mother Mrs Anne Nelson, who passed away last December. Mrs Nelson was involved in many community and church activities throughout her life and was a great supporter of Jane’s horse related activities. A fire fighter and safety advocate, Jane used two of her highly reliable Carrick highland ponies, Carrick Lord Torran and his son Carrick Lord Arran to give novice riders a day to remember.

Jane and her helpers were exhausted after leading 23 ‘jockeys’ over six mini jumps, and 17 ‘cowardly cowboys’ around the field. All participants received a rosette for their efforts. Bill Miller, Chairman of the fundraising committee for the Carrick Centre said, ‘We’d like to thank Jane for all the work she put into this inspiring fundraising event. She made it look so easy and despite the rain, there was a very positive atmosphere which made the day enjoyable for all. She is very resourceful and even the BBQ organised by the Carrick Centre committee day raised over £100!’

Thanks to all helpers on the day, Auchenwynd Kennels whose field was used for the event, and to Robertson & Orr Vets, Alloway Road Motors and the Maybole Arms who provided sponsorship.

Around 110 pupils came together for the first time in a series of physical team challenges within the PE department with tasks such as Bucket Head, Hockey Dribble and Helium Stick!

After a healthy lunch Carrick’s school captains Eilidh Douglas and David MacIntyre spoke eloquently about their experiences at Carrick and how they were now preparing to head off to University. The pupils then enjoyed a whimsical musical tour of the school by means of a DVD which was put together by the School’s film and media pupils. In the afternoon pupils’ leadership skills were tested again with the Peer Helping training led by senior school pupils. The P7s will then use their training to work with younger pupils in the primaries.

All in all, it was a challenging but rewarding day with opportunities galore for pupils to demonstrate their leadership potential. Thanks also to the many staff involved in making the day a success. Feedback from the P7s was extremely positive and they now look forward to their three day visit in June.
